brotherbluto wrote: Mon Jun 10, 2019 2:33 am I just saw an article online that says Sony's restoration of Holiday (1938) is coming to Criterion blu. It was from the 2019 mar/apr postmagazine.com.
Here's the actual article.
Post Magazine wrote:CULVER CITY, CA — Sony Pictures Entertainment (www.sonypictures.com) recently completed a 4K digital restoration of Holiday, the 1938 romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Directed by George Cukor, the newly-restored film screened recently at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood in advance of its release on Blu-ray by The Criterion Collection.

Excellent. That'll leave Talk of the Town as the only film from the Sony Cary Grant set to not get upgraded to BD.

Very happy about the Holiday announcement. The only thing I'm dreading is the cover, given what Criterion have designed for the classics lately.

I'd love it if they could somehow include the earlier version with Ann Harding and Mary Astor.

Janus have tweeted that Martin Bell's Streetwise and its companion film Tiny will be getting a theatrical release this summer. The tweet has been liked by Criterion, and I'd be surprised if it isn't on their schedule.

Last time the 15th fell on a Saturday they gave us announcements the day before. Maybe it'll be the same this time around.

Everybody place their spurs, grab their lariats, and set their sights on that victory Bolo Tie .... its the Speculation Rodeo (September 2019)

Polyester - Confirmed by John Waters a few times

Local Hero - Recently confirmed via an Instagram post

The Circus - Janus Chaplin tour / on Filmstruck (etc)

Cluny Brown - March 2019 newsletter clue

The Cloud-Capped Star - Feb 2019 newsletter clue, also a WCP restoration, but wasn't on my list (unsure why, sorry folks)

Fists in the Pocket - Upgrade / Janus tour / received 4k restoration
================================================
239 upgrades remain
================================================
The All-Around Cowpoke of the month was a tough battle this month - with the favorite - Bressonaire, losing out on their final ride. They win the Consolation Lariat for their valiant effort.

But this month's All-Around Cowpoke, with an impressive 5/6 result, is:

McNulty

=================================================
Still no clue what the park bench dreaming king clue is for; and I'm unsure if any of these might solve that either. We also still have the New Years clues untouched (chiefly: the sled)
=============================

And with the setting sun, a happy cowpoke's work is done. See ya'll at next month's Speculation Rodeo!

Thanks for the round up!

There's one thing on that Letterboxd list that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere before - Rosita (1923) .... and their justification for inclusion is rather unconvincing:
MOMA is currently completing a restoration with the participation of the Film Foundation. Considering their Lubitsch history and the idea of including Mary Pickford in the Collection, it seems likely (though is still low on the list considering it's silent and another label might do it).
Otherwise its a weird jumble of most all of the WCP films / random films picked from the Criterion Channel / random films picked from the directors section of my list. There doesn't appear to be anything that our list is missing + I hope people prefer my organization and upkeep a bit more. :P

Dear Criterion folks... here a humble idea for a future BoxSet (please)

Pedro Almodóvar's latest movie closes spontaneous biographical trilogy

I don't see why Criterion don't just give Almodovar the Bergman treatment with a huge set of everything up to at least BAD EDUCATION. Sony has the rights to everything since 2016. Restorations were already done on almost everything but PEPI LUCI BOM/LABYRINTH OF PASSION/MATADOR - and since these were acquired only after the previous batch of restorations you would think they would have done them as well now. Canal sat on releasing a second Almodovar box set of those restorations in the UK which would have featured all his more famous films. Criterion has released only two titles from those restorations. It's annoying when it's all just sitting there waiting to be put to disc.

Remember when Criterion was once on the receiving end of the Lynchian ire? Glad things are different now.

This may be old news, but Janus is screening a 4K restoration of "The Cranes Are Flying" this Friday at Film Forum. Not sure if it's even necessary to say that a BD upgrade is on the horizon.

On the Janus website it says blu-ray under it's description so I'm sure it's imminent.

It's strange that the Film Forum webpage only claims a 2K scan.

They have listed incorrect resto info before, for instance claimimg Room at the Top was a 4K restoration.

From the HTF podcast, Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala has been held up by element issues, and may still be a while before a release.

There was a claim more than ten years ago that Gosfilmofond had the original 70mm elements, but wasn't willing to loan them out. I wonder if this is still the holdup all these years later.
