"Natural causes" is used all the time when the actual cause of death is not disclosed or is otherwise unavailable to reporters but not the result of foul play or accident.

Not true, they tend to say that the person died after a long or protracted illness. My mother died of cancer, and this was how it was written in her obituary. It was also written this way for an old girl friend who died from breast cancer and for an uncle who died from colon cancer.

Sounds like someone at your local paper isn't a big fan of the c-word.

Come on, man, just google the phrase "death by natural causes" and be done with it. It's completely routine usage.

And actually start taking this seriously? Just when I'm starting to get personal anecdotes and replies laced with frustration? Not on your life, son.

That's sure a funny way of saying "You're right, I don't know what I was thinking."

A long, accomplished and fun life.

I'm guessing I'm not the only person here with a bunch of Grove paperbacks on their shelf.

Very sad news. While his Bergman films and the Tarkovsky are the giant pillars of his career, I also want to point out his great performances in Dusan Makavejev's Montenegro, Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books and in István Szabó's Hanussen, along with his work with Liv Ullmann, particularly in the excellent framing scenes in Faithless.
