Yes it really looks terrible. Two different generations of Fox fucking up color on a film baked into one transfer!

Ahh, I meant to post this. I have the old German Blu-ray and thought Tooze was overselling this new one. It is extremely dark and quite red.

They really abused the contrast setting to a rather insane degree.

There are lunatics defending it at the usual forums for such people too. The German Blu-ray ain't great (nor was the Fox DVD), but at least I can see patterns in the clothing in my hi-def image

Fox restorations are all over the place colour wise since they trashed so many of their original elements.

I believe that even with references, the people who thought this look is OK would have ended up doing exactly the same thing.

For what it's worth, RAH thinks this is one of the better Fox restoration efforts of a 3 strip film and specifically says that the Beaver caps are inaccurate, noting that the disc is not as dark as they would suggest.

It might not be as dark, but it won't be vastly different either. From what I gathered so far from Beaver, the caps might be off by maybe 2 or 3 RGB values (say 10 10 10 instead of 12 12 12), which won't make a (literal) night and day difference.
Not that RAH would know anything about this though, as he repeatedly seemed clueless while facing purely digital aspects of a release.
