It's a luxury if you talk about Blu, but as jwd5275 spoke of Region 1 and not of Region A, he must have had DVD in mind.
EDIT: domino beat me to it.

I assumed we were all talking about Blu. (I still sloppily refer to both formats as Region 1 sometimes. I also sometimes refer to Blu-rays as DVDs.)

How is it a luxury, compared to Blu-ray itself, when it needn't cost more than having a Blu-ray player or drive (in the US and the UK at least)?

That's like saying "How is my yacht a luxury, compared to your yacht? How could we survive without our yachts? Let's go drive around in our yachts and belittle that guy over there in the speedboat."

I've no idea what you just wrote.

The blu-ray player on my yacht has a feature where it goes region-free in international waters.

Let me clarify. I am not region locked. However, I am a big supporter of people being having films available in their own region code where they can get interested in the film at say a local store, on Amazon, the public library, etc.
Yes. All blus / DVDs should be region-free (I was sloppily referring to both), but in the absence of that it is good to have the releases in more than one region so more people are exposed to good films

I just tested my Blu-ray player, and it doesn't even float.
Seriously, great month, with the Etaix and Kobayashi being essential discoveries (and I say that even though I found the only one of the Kobayashis that I've seen, Black River, overrated). Every time I'm ready to break up with Criterion for good....

Mr Mulvaney,
Some time back there was a confirmation of sorts that a title or titles by Jan Troell were in production, or at least slated to be. It's been a while, but as I recall The Emigrants and The New Land were the most likely titles. They are certainly worthy of spine numbers, and for a few years now I have looked forward to each 15th of the month in the hopes they would be announced. Is a Troell still in the works? If so, can we expect a box of sorts with these two epics together?
Thanks in advance,
And got the most canned response possible that could not possibly have been less of an answer. I choose to believe it's because I guessed part of the May slate.
Hello Historyprof,
Thank you for your email. We announce all our upcoming titles on our
website as soon as we can make them public. The best way to stay
up-to-date on our future release plans is to check our "Coming Soon"
section and e-newsletter. I've included links below for your
convenience.
I hope this helps, and feel free to write again should you have
further questions!
Sincerely,
Jon Mulvaney
Would it be rude to respond "I'm sorry, but that didn't help AT ALL. Could you BE any less helpful? GOSH!!!"?

I think these letters are primarily automated.

I think that Jon Mulvaney isn't a name for different answer men, it's a fully-functioning answer bot. Unfortunately, it went haywire a few years ago, and threw Peter Becker out a window, but it's fine now.

so which address do you send an email to in order to get a human response?

The Mulvaney one. It's just a matter of whether they want to give you a real answer or not. When I had some disc problems recently, I sent in an email and they were really helpful (they actually replaced 2 defective discs).
I think in this case you got exactly the answer they wanted to give you, that's all.

That'll teach you to give out thanks in advance. Do you think they'll give it back now?

Criterion only has time now to respond to threats, like when that guy took Facebook hostage until they agreed to release Week End.

Week End.

He's waiting for it to come down to under $15. Maybe.

I'm planning to wage a similar campaign in order to get Criterion to release
The Soft Skin,
I Married a Witch, and the nine members of the Asian Dawn movement.

I watched
I Married a Witch on Hulu+ this AM. It's gonna really need some work just to be part of a "Rene Clair in Hollywood" Eclipse set.

I believe Criterion just used Westchester's existing master for Hulu, but will be doing their own new high-def transfer for disc, possibly from a completely different source.
