Looks like it was designed by Joao Rosa, the creative director of EDGLRD, Korine’s “creative collective,” so seems to be very intentionally evocative. Surprised they didn’t swap out the bunny ears for a horned mask while they were at it!

I am absolutely stoked by the Lewton announcement. But I gotta say - that cover design is a bit of a dog's breakfast!

It does have the look of one of those cheapo genre double bill discs. I’d have preferred a single piece of art integrating elements from both films.

The Last Emperor [4K] (Booklet)
Brief Encounters/The Long Farewell
Not a Pretty Picture
Real Life [4K]
Mother [4K]
Notes on the respective restorations can be found at the bottom of these pages:
The Last Emperor (I don't have the Arrow edition but it appears to be the same restoration they used)
Brief Encounters/The Long Farewell
Not a Pretty Picture
Real Life
Mother

Kind of surprised that The Last Emperor isn't a digipak.

Yes, this is the restoration that’s on Arrow & Turbine’s UHDs. They collaborated here again after Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Unfortunately Criterion have started reducing the transfer notes to the bare minimum last year, otherwise they’d have likely shared this. Restoration and grading was done by LSP in Germany.

I am confused; under the tech specs, the linked page states "HDR: HDR10 [Extended Version] , Dolby Vision [Extended Version] , HDR10 [Theatrical Version] , Dolby Vision [Theatrical Version]", but isn't the Extended Version only on Blu-ray and therefore wouldn't have HDR?

The extended cut is BD only and SDR. I assume something was mixed up while listing the specs.

It's a bug on my end bubthe looks of it. Sorry about that. The theatrical on 4K is the only one with HDR/Dolby Vision

That MS Paint Scarface cover is one of the worst pieces of shit I’ve ever seen

the new ones are generally all quite atrocious but Scarface is indeed a new low. looks beyond amateur
this reminds me of July...2022? when we got the cover art leaks and they were all such a joke I decided to believe them. being surrounded by this month, it's only all the more obvious just how good Seven Samurai remains

Scarface looks like it could be a screen from that NES game Deja Vu

I was going to say Funny Girl has the only good new cover, but it's not even original!
Paper Moon's cover is okay, though.

Seven Samurai remains
Don’t downplay how good that Godzilla cover is too but besides that yeah pretty bland covers this month and Scarface is shockingly bad especially from someone who designed The Circus cover which remains one of my favorites from the collection.

Scarface immediately made me think of swimminghorses. The cover would have been fine without the filter on Muni and the background.

I originally came to say "oh my god, that Shape of Water cover is... something", but that was before I saw that garbage rubbish of a Scarface cover. Wow, just wow.

Funny Girl is good (largely by virtue of just being solid existing art), the other new ones are middling to awful. Paper Moon might be my least-favorite just because of how bland it is compared to the film's iconic posters. Who is going to be sold on any of these films by these covers?

Did the same person do Paper Moon and Shape of Water? Like come on switch it up. I'm a little shocked they didn't commission an illustrator for the del Toro like they've done before.

The Shape of Water was done by the great Greg Ruth, what?

That has to be like the third time that a Greg Ruth cover was mistaken for a still.
Oh, that Scarface cover is inexcusably bad.

Yeah sad that Scarface was the one that got the short straw this month. Cover definitely looks bad amongst the winners, both past and present.
Paper Moon is good, nice composition and use of space.

The weird orange mark scribbled over Muni's face is hilarious in its juvenile attempts to fit the title, which is also written in typeface that would be attached to a screwball comedy. So it all fits together to insinuate a silly romp, except that's not what this movie is. Maybe Criterion's laziest and most misguided cover art yet
