Or even all of them. I'm really glad we have him as Mexican cinema has been so good for decades but dreadfully underseen outside the country.
I'd settle for the ten best Mexcan Bunuel films not yet released on subbed BluRay.

That would be nice, but I'm greedy for my favorite Bunuel era.

Guillermo del Toro tweeted We are working hard to help Criterion to publish some Mexican Classics (including EL SUAVECITO ) and most of Mexican Bunuel.
Great news!!!!
Beyond the Mexican Bunuel, I hope are considered: MACARIO, ENAMORADA, and MARIA CANDELARIA

Long overdue.
Jim Hoberman wrote a great feature for the NY Times that actually directs people to YouTube because for most people in the U.S., it's the only way to see anything from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.

Mexican Buñuel sounds like Eclipse to me.

Since the Mexican films are so unknown in the US, it would be good to provide more "support" than is provided with Eclipse releases (not an issue for me -- but better if aimed at a somewhat broader audience).

There are quite a few films. Some of the major ones deserve their own release. Otherwise I’d love to see some Eclipse sets with the rest of them.
A good start might be “George Pepper and Olmec Productions”.
George Pepper, who went to Mexico during the HUAC investigations, founded
Olmec Productions and produced four films there, two of them by Luis Buñuel —
Robinson Crusoe and
The Young One. (The other two are
¡Torero! and
The Little Giants, both directed by Hugo Butler.) It’s an interesting collaboration between George Pepper, Hugo Butler, and Luis Buñuel during this period.
Maybe another devoted to Luis Buñuel and Mexican public transportation with
Illusion Travels by Streetcar and
Mexican Bus Ride.

We know Crit has the Crusoe, but The Young One is with Studio Canal in the US.

Question for the moderators:
Does “Luis Buñuel’s Mexican Films” deserve its own topic at this point?

Not til we see more than a quote like this, which could mean GDT is literally just talking to them about the idea or giving them contacts he has. And if it does happen, we don’t know what kind of release it would be yet

Kino Lorber has licensed every other title in Universal’s Stanwyck box, so yeah, it’s almost certainly with them
Almost certainly

I was thinking more about the films themselves as a topic, rather than as a “release” per se. Maybe just under the general director discussion for Buñuel?

Rosalie Varda joins mk2 films to manage 800-title classic film catalogue
Do we think this could mean anything for Criterion? They have a relationship with Varda, from years of licensing her mother's films (not to mention upcoming box set), but they also presumably already have a relationship with mk2?

They've already
licensed a bunch of titles from mk2 and there are others (
Two English Girls, additional Chaplins and Kiarostamis) that Janus has but aren't currently out on Criterion. So I doubt this changes anything.

Taking it with a grain of salt, but still,… according to one guy on Facebook (Criterion Considered group):
Just came back from a talk given by Kiarostami's son, Ahmad. According to him, Criterion is working on a Kiarostami box set with "all his films," to be released 2019!!! Koker Trilogy may be released separately however as its own set.
It's looking increasingly unlikely that there will be a complete Kiarostami set, so I wonder if Criterion will follow Potemkine in releasing a set with his Kanoon films despite having released The Traveler, The Report and Homework as extras on other Kiarostami releases. Otherwise, one would have thought that they would have included some on 24 Frames or the newly-announced Taste of Cherry upgrade.
I asked Ahmad Kiarostami if Criterion would be releasing the rest of the Kanoon films and his response was
"Yes, on their streaming service", so it seems like they might not all get a disc release.

I wonder if there is a chance of
Wild Wild Country coming to Criterion....

Celine and Julie Go Boating, Jafar Panahi's Mirror and all the new Jackie Chan films are playing on the Criterion Channel with a Janus logo. The new Fassbinders and Zhangke films are too, but that was not much of a surprise.

There was also a nice interview with
Gael García Bernal in the Guardian today where he mentions that after the country's equivalent of the daily Coronavirus update, that Mexican television is following it up with lots of classic films from the 1930s to 1950s. I'm rather jealous!

What is it? A filmed stage performance (like Cats) or a documentary about the stage musical?

It's a documentary about the recording of the original cast album directed by D.A. Pennabaker.

There just has to be a Bergman-like boxset for Fassbinder coming. It's going to take forever for them to release the ones they already had.
Glad they finally have my 2 favorite of his (Third Generation / 13 Moons) though. Wonder if they have Bolwieser that Olive Films announced they were going to release 10 years ago?

They presumably have all the former Fantoma titles, not just these, so it could be a possibility. Or they plan to leak them out slowly for a decade like so many other Director filmographies they drip-release
