I was told by one of the programmers that a Romanian New Wave retrospective will be scheduled for the NYC Film Forum

It's not online yet, but according to the Metrograph zine they are playing some Minelli in 35mm starting August 16, including Brigadoon, Lust for Life, Gigi, Kismet and a few others.

Gigi would be great. I was actually thinking of getting the BD recently, but I looked into it and found out that the film elements have a LOT of problems (partly because the stock itself isn't known to hold up very well). The attempts to fix it for the BD weren't that successful, but it would be great to see an excellent print if they've got one.

Don't let the summer go by without a trip (or several) to the Anthology Film Archives for their Essential Cinema series. Most, if not all, in the series are 35mm screenings. A selection of Bresson is featured over the next couple of weeks. My sudden nostalgia for viewing films in the oldest New York theaters and the looming closure of The Paris inspired a renewed interest in the AFA. Don't want to lose this!

The series is Minelli in widescreen and everything's on 35

Some Came Running, Kismet, the Reluctant Debutant, and Bells Are Ringing, in that order. Some ‘Scope titles are MIA, like Goodbye Charlie

Gigi was a fun film for the most part (though like Some Came Running, I found its ending pretty abrupt!) but I will say that the print I saw pretty much resembles the screencaps on DVD Beaver. It definitely had a different color timing than Running, which more closely resembles Home From The Hill, and has the golden/blueish lean.

Does anyone in this thread have any experience securing / renting out prints for viewing? Have a random personal question. Please message me if possible!

I know that school’s get a discount on rentals, from my days as an intern at Anthology Film Archives, and a TA at UARTS in Philly.

Film at Lincoln Center will be showing a 35mm print of Otto Preminger's Porgy and Bess on September 19.

Is it supposed to be good? I love Preminger and I've loved this opera, but I'm still wary.

I didn't realize it was so scarce. Found this in a late 2011 entry on Glenn Kenny's blog regarding its selection into the National Film Registry:

...one of the more exciting pictures on the list is Otto Preminger's 1959 Porgy and Bess, a picture that's been almost impossible to see in any halfway decent presentation for pretty much...well, for pretty much the length of my own movie-going life, something a couple of hairs over four decades.

If you have any interest in seeing the complete film in presumably good picture quality, infrequent screenings like these are the only way to do it. As a big Preminger fan, I immediately bought a ticket.

Lincoln Center is charging slightly more than usual per ticket for this, probably to cover the Gershwin Estate's higher screening fees.

Seeing The Stranger by Visconti at Lincoln Center was similarly a bit of a bummer, despite rarity. Glad I saw it, I guess?

To those of you that have seen NYFF screenings at Alice Tully Hall, is there still a significant problem with the sound system there? My father and I will be catching The Irishman and Motherless Brooklyn there, and both of us have enough trouble with our hearing already that I want to make sure our enjoyment of the films won't be significantly affected.

I've been going to the NYFF since 1988 and I've never had a problem with audio at Tully. Happily, they don't have screenings in the cavernous Fisher/Geffen Hall any more.

I believe you're thinking of Carmen Jones. Porgy & Bess is not mentioned in the book.

Ah! Yes. A little ashamed of myself for this gaff. At least they're both Preminger.

No idea what this is about. When did you experience issues? Recently or historically?

When I went to see The Other Side of the Wind at Alice Tully, I found the sound rather muddled by the hall's poor acoustics. It was, admittedly, the worst possible film to watch there.
