Would this be for
Gaslight? A
Notorious upgrade?
I can't see them adding this to a
Renoir: Stage and Spectacle upgrade.

They should upgrade Bergman’s trilogy! It’s overdue!

If Notorious then Criterion got back the MGM/Selznick titles which would be great.

Our local art house is having a mini Ingrid Berman festival this summer, with the titles being Journey to Italy, Autumn Sonata, Casablanca, and Gaslight, accompanying that documentary- given that two of the movies are already with Criterion and that one of them is Casablanca, I'd bet it's for Gaslight.

Surely this will be included as a supplement for
Chimes at Midnight. Do we think the Ingrid Bergman doc will be a mainline release?

Doubtful. It's almost certainly going to be an extra feature. I don't see them going back to the Bergman Island-type cheapo separate release strategy again (if it were viable they surely would have done so for Liv & Ingmar, for one example).

Agreed and hopefully you're right because the possibilities here are tantalizing.

Based on what I have read about the film on this forum, isn't
The Immortal Story more likely a separate release, with different versions and extras (
The Dreamers footage?), instead of being attached to another film as an bonus feature?
Chimes and
Immortal may well be the twofer releases Criterion used to do a lot.

I assume because of the runtime (60 mins) that it would be, perhaps Chimes will be a 2 disc set? Or maybe a The Killing/Killer's Kiss, Close-Up/The Traveler, etc type release? Nonetheless, it's not unprecedented that a short feature receives a standalone release, like
A Day in the Country.

Strictly from a commercial standpoint, I'd be shocked if the market for Immortal Story as a standalone exists. Chimes has a lot going for it: many perceive it to be his masterpiece and it was sorely underseen for decades. There's a reason to seek it out. Immortal Story is for Welles-die hards, and any extras about unreleased footage from that era is as well.

The thing is tho, that I would think anyway that there is a ton of stuff, pre-existing and not, that could be added as extras to a Chimes at Midnight release, without benefit of The Immortal Story. Hmm!

And I think Criterion sometimes releases things that they know won't make any money. I think the question is, is Immortal Story a significant/good enough film to merit a stand-alone release.

I think Immortal Story is a great film, though not as great as most of Welles' true feature-length films. It was part of a planned series that got scrapped. Chimes with a new commentary, Immortal as a bonus film, and a good visual essay would be a superb double-disc release.

What are the chances of it being included on a set of Othello and Chimes at Midnight? I'd be very surprised if Othello and Chimes weren't sequential spines at the least.
