More movie relevance, to perch on this forum atop the more substantial list of Mandela's world-shaking achievements--he played the teacher in Soweto at the end of Spike Lee's
Malcolm X. Obviously he's meant there to be recognized as himself, and it's not really a character part so much as a guest cameo.

The headline scared me for a second, but thankfully the first role the article mentioned was her phenomenal turn in Caged.

One of the absolute greats, and still impressing my students year after year with her turns in Caged and Detective Story
EDIT The obit's wrong, she was nominated for Best Actress, not Supporting for Detective Story-- it's in fact the shortest performance ever nominated for Best Actress

I'm very glad TCM recently had her as Star of the Month. Some of the wartime women's pictures she did were excellent, and I would probably never have seen them otherwise.

She was one of those few actors that the mere presence of racked any film up a few more notches than they would be without her.

Jay Robinson, who played Caligula in
The Robe and
Demetrius and the Gladiators
This happened a few months back, but no one mentioned it before (and I only just found out today due to his inclusion in TCM's memorial tribute).

Jay Robinson was also Dr. Shrinker for those of us who grew up in the late '70's, as well as the exasperated green skinned diplomat who kept feeling France Nguyen's wrath on the Elaan of Troyius episode of Star Trek.

Another passings of some days ago now, Pulitzer prize winning historian
Michael Kammen.
Most noted for writing about American history, democracy and the U.S. constitution, Kammen also wrote, THE LIVELY ARTS, a wonderful biography of Gilbert Seldes, the father of the great Albee actress Marian Seldes, and the man who first made the radical proposition (in his book THE SEVEN LIVELY ARTS [1924]), that such things as jazz, vaudeville & Broadway, comics and film were, in fact, Art.

Another reason, then, for the traditional festive viewing of Robert Montgomery's odd point-of-view Lady In The Lake.

I gotta say, without passing any judgment, that Peter O'Toole's is the least surprising celebrity death ever.

RIP, I loved O'Toole. For me he'll be remembered for playing my old friend Jeffrey Bernard in Waterhouse's adaptation, and the film director in
The Stunt Man. Magnificent.
I wouldn't, however, watch
Lawrence ever again, I fell asleep for eight hours and when I woke up the fucking thing was still going on.
