They also said that they didn't license any StudioCanal titles from Lionsgate.

and that they'll be doing all the restorations themselves, which I find really fascinating. with Criterion licensing Eve's Bayou from Lionsgate I assume that LGF has finally seen the value in licensing out titles to boutique labels? dustybooks brought up Shattered Glass as a prime LGF title for KLSC - I think that fits their buyer base almost perfectly. something like Dogville is more likely Criterion's. curious to see what comes forward

KLI also confirmed that Paper Moon was not available to them in their Paramount deal - I can't remember if this was already confirmed or not

They often do the majority remastering in these deals. Especially the ones with Universal and Paramount.

When they first started licensing these studio titles in 2017 that wasn't the case, and that reputation stuck, even if it doesn't apply to the last several years. Same thing with people saying their releases are "barebones," when they often have newly produced interviews and commentaries.

I suspect Lionsgate's rights have already expired and reverted to Universal. A similar thing happened with the director's cut of Natural Born Killers (released on video by Trimark when WB got cold feet, re-released by Lionsgate after they acquired Trimark, re-re-released by WB themselves after the Trimark deal presumably lapsed).

The video rights are possibly with Christine Vachon/Killer Films. It’s screened theatrically in the last few years, and I believe LionsGate always supplied the print

The only 35mm print source info I can find is this from 2014, which credits Focus. There have been more recent screenings, but I can't find any with a distributor credit or print source. None of Lionsgate's various predecessors handled the theatrical release (Good Machine did it themselves), so if Lionsgate really does have the theatrical rights, they would've acquired them sometime in the near-recent past. I can see it being possible that the rights have gone to Killer Films—though that doesn't appear to have happened with Safe, which is a few years older—but if Vachon had the opportunity to relicense the theatrical rights, I would expect her to go with an actual indie/boutique distributor, not Lionsgate (which I doubt would even want the film at this stage).

Focus Features (shockingly) has this film on their website (with a DVD purchase link that sends you to an Amazon page with a Region 2 release), but Lionsgate is credited as the provider for the online purchases, both on YouTube and Amazon. My guess is that both companies own some part of the film (Focus regaining theatrical, Lionsgate retaining home video) and neither wants to admit owning any part of it (made obvious by the fact that none of these links make it easy to actually watch the film)

Bug, Friedkin's 2006 film, is a Lionsgate property, right? If so, a Kino BD would be welcome though preferably from a fresh scan.

Yeah and when they do that, there will be zero commentary track on the main feature at all. Classic.

They might be in limbo at the moment. Largo Entertainment was the copyright holder and their holdings were acquired by Intermedia in 2001. Then Intermedia went bust and most of the library ended up at "R Media Acquisitions," a vehicle for notorious film financier/fraudster David Bergstein, currently serving an eight-year sentence in federal prison. No idea if R Media still has the rights or if they were sold off after Bergstein's conviction.

As annoying as the many releases of The Lady from Shanghai is this does seem to be the best US release barring any PQ screwups. And I love the cover art.
