Doesn't the DGA already have a category for Movies made for television?

The list of new Academy members for 2019 features some interesting names. Just picking the names that stand out to me from the list, it was nice to see Claire Bloom and Kenneth Cranham among the actors, along with Jean-Louis Trintingant and Giancarlo Giannini. In other disciplines Hong Kyung-pyo, the cinematographer of Burning and Kim Hyun, the Editor of Burning are both made members. Also Julio Suárez, the Costume Designer of Lucrecia Martel's more recent films (The Holy Girl, The Headless Woman and Zama). Annie Lennox is invited in the Musicians category.

Interestingly amongst the directors Matteo Garrone of Gomorrah and Alison Maclean stand out (I'd love to see a Blu-ray edition of her debut film Crush!), but further down in the "Short Films and Feature Animation" category both Mamoru Oshii (director of the 1995 Ghost In The Shell,the 2004 sequel Innocence and Angel's Egg) and Katsuhiro Otomo (director of Akira and Steamboy) get invited to the Academy, though they both have experience directing live action films as well. And whilst Andrew Bujalski directs his films, he has been invited under the "Writers" branch instead! Along with Anna Biller, and Andrew Haigh. And Agnès Jaoui! And Cédric Klapisch! I guess that being invited under the Writer's branch is to emphasise the personal touches the writer-director brings to each of their films?

I believe the individual branches choose who to invite, so it’s just a case of the writers having better taste / actually knowing who these people are

How has it taken Trintingant this long to be invited?

The writing branch has been one of the few lights in terms of nominees, but directing hasn't been too far off as well.

This is my first time putting a dipstick in this race, so I have no idea how close or far off he is from the consensus. Looks pretty nice to me, though! However, it's notable that he doesn't have Brad Pitt in contention for Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood in either lead or supporting actor (at all, not even as a long shot) so he's dead to me

I don't understand this meme of Judy being a credible Best Picture contender, other than that I have no unique complaints as the ones I do have more to do with general trend chasing and conversation pieces.

Parasite being a best picture contender over anything seems absurd. I’ll believe that’s a genuine crossover hit when I see it.

It and Joker will both be nominated, mark my words

I don't think I've seen the level of audience and critic hype for a foreign film without some major Hollywood crossover than I have for Parasite, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

And between Jojo Rabbit and Joker there will be at least one contentiously reviewed film that gets in with either box-office crossover or *sigh* cultural backlash.

OK, there's Brad Pitt in Supporting Actor, at the top of most of the predictions. I thought I had gone insane. Also surprised to see that Tom Hanks will be run in supporting for the Mr. Rogers movie - that could be a performance that's hard for anyone to top since it's a supporting performance with the marquee buzz.

Also, i don't know what Variety's Tim Gray was smoking on September 10th, but I want some:

I wonder if people are uneasy about Hanks’ award chances after he somehow failed to be nominated for Captain Phillips and then his Walt Disney bio went nowhere too? Seems like a shoo in for a nom in whichever category he runs in

I could see Almodovar OR Bong Joon-ho OR Malick getting a Best Director nom, but it’s a “pick one” scenario for art house favorites to rally around in that category

Unless NEON pulls a NEON, I can't imagine Bong not getting nominated - especially since he's already crossed over to making a couple of more traditional Hollywood films. That's a big "unless," though - voters have to see the movie, and they can't trade on the tabloid appeal that they did with I, Tonya.

By the way, how great is the still relatively newfound lack of a Weinstein-headed studio when it comes to the Oscar race? No more completely dull period piece that's just considered to be strongly in contention because it's going to get a strong Weinstein push. Feels good man.

Considering Almodovar and Malick have already been nominated for Best Director, he seems the most likely from a “career reward” perspective

Plus his film is by far the most acclaimed film out of the three.

Look here, The Current War was the story of the founding of electrical lighting that all the young kids were going to just love, if only they got the chance to see it!

We also have that Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne re-team up from The Theory of Everything in The Aeronauts upcoming, which perhaps fits the bill. And the Downton Abbey film.

Hey, sometimes those period pieces were a little better than dull (Carol, The Master). And didn't a dull terrible period piece just win Best Picture (and Original Screenplay, over First Reformed)?

That is totally not the sort of film I was talking about. More like Stephen Daldry projects, Tom Hooper projects (though I liked The King's Speech well enough), etc etc

First of all, that dress she is wearing is probably worth more than what I make in a year, but her actual wording come off a bit different. She is speaking specifically about pay disparity and how winning awards doesn't equal actual money. Which makes sense I guess. Depends how cynical you want to be
