For US orderers, the preorder for this on OrbitDVD is actually $10-15 dollars cheaper than ordering direct from Eureka (depending on whether you bundle with more items for free shipping)

These are the same two installments Kalat recorded commentaries for on the Kino as well (Kino used a different title for the first part), so my guess is that these will either be the same tracks or just updated rerecordings

What are these shorts, and are they available anywhere else?

Technically, only one by Feuillade: “Lagourdette gentleman cambrioler” (with Musidora).
Then there’s a Gaston Ravel short also with Musidora: “La Grand Souffle.” And also a Feyder feature with Musidora: “Le Pied qui étreint.”
These and the pretty nice color booklet (84 pages) make it worth keeping. There’s also a feature doc on Feuillade (without subs, if I remember correctly) as well as the TV movie about Musidora by Jean-Christophe Averty, which I haven’t watched yet and which may be without subs.

My dream is that someone someday will release Musidora’s directorial work on disc. Pipe dreams…

The other Kalat commentaries on this set are designated "new" whilst these are not, so I'm sure you're correct that they're ported from the Kino.

It's already sold out for preorders on Atomicmoviestore - not sure how many more copies Orbit orders, but this might be one for folks to jump on. I certainly did

As soon as I saw it would only be 2000 copies I pre-ordered, that seems quite low for an obvious release of the year contender, even if they are silents.

I procrastinated a bit, had the (orbit) order finalized a few days ago, but this thread reminded me I needed to actually place it. (Took me long enough…)

So, is there a chance we get a slimmed-down version down the line, or is this it?

I suspect they'll break them down individually or in pairs like the Żuławski set, but I suppose there could be a version without the book

I’m just begging that this doesn’t become like the Mizoguchi set and there’s a standard edition in the future.

There are also five Feuillade shorts on the Artificial Eye DVD release of Les Vampires.

This is turning out to be such a wonderful set. It’s really too bad they couldn’t get Barrabas. It would also be nice to get some clarity on the status of the Judex sequel.

That's because at a time when budgets have never been tighter you need people you can rely on.

Although it wasn't that long ago that Pamela Hutchinson made her on-disc debut - in fact, I edited and mixed her debut commentary as recently as 2020, and it was very obvious well before I'd finished that it wouldn't be her last.

One of the best "new" faces. She managed to get a worthwhile commentary out of an (imo) forgettable movie like The Lady Gambles.

I notice she keeps an updated extraography on her website, which is handy.

As for the others, you would be a little disappointed not to get your Kalats and your Newmans on a release like this one.

I thought Kat Ellinger did the commentary for The Lady Gambles?

On the Indicator, Ellinger did the KLSC

Being MoC, any reissue will still come with some kind of booklet, albeit with much of the content removed. I imagine they'll either do a slimmed-down version of the set with less fancy packaging, or split the set into four separate editions like you say (Fantomas, Les Vampires, Judex, Tin-Minh).

The set is now confirmed to be 9 discs (rather than the original 10 advertised on announcement), so I imagine it'll be 2 discs per film, plus an extra disc for either Les Vampires or Tin-Minh. They could quite easily be reissued separately but you could be waiting a while for such a thing - it took roughly a year for each of the last two Buster Keaton box sets to get standard editions, and the first one took nearly two years! Depending on how quickly these 2000 units sell, you could be waiting 'til late 2025 or even into 2026 for any sort of reissue.

It's been a while since my whole month's movie watching plans have been radically alterred due to the release of a single item.

I'm more annoyed since I ordered this alongside The Champions. No idea if they will ship it separately now, so I will have to cancel my order and place separate ones now.

In my experience, Eureka! always ships items separately, when they are available.

I’m not surprised, this is a huge release and it didn’t seem plausible it was shipping in a matter of days. Between this and the Capra box, it will be a merry Thanksgiving season indeed
