Wasn't it Bob Balaban who said Anderson's next film was to be inspired by De Sica, which Umberto D having a dog in it aside doesn't describe Isle of Dogs?

Wonder if that means another big name is going to be chosen or someone Anderson works with a ton is just going to step in. Wish he were still on good terms with Luke Wilson, for example.
Would be very bummed if Portman also ends up not doing it!

Anyone know the story here? I've wondered about it for a long time, but nothing seems to crop up online. I'd imagine there almost had to be some kind of falling out, as he's worked with Owen so much more regularly it'd seem unusual for them to have simply drifted apart.

Nope! I've even broached the topic with Matt Zoller Seitz who said he wished he knew what was up but that it's likely too personal to try to find out.

But there is something up? I always assumed that he was just closer to Owen, who I am hoping one day gets Academy recognition for a Wes movie (similar to the McConaissance) and maybe even teams up to write again.
As to some of the posts above, I do remember hearing talk about trying to do something similar to de Sica where a number of stories were told in an episodic manner. And in regard to musicals, I have tried and continuously failed for the most part.

He hasn't been in even a tiny role in any Anderson film since
The Royal Tenenbaums, despite Owen (and even Andrew lending a voice!) continuing to pop up as often as possible, among other actors from that earlier era. I would say that is plenty of evidence of something being up, it's not as though Luke Wilson has ascended to superstardom, and his character was the beating heart of Anderson's best film after a prominent supporting role and the lead in the first two.
Wasn't at the 10th anniversary of Tenenbaums, either.
There were rumors around the time that he did
Old School all the way up through those dreadful AT&T commercials that he was a raging alcoholic, and he certainly looked that part by the time his inspired and relevant work in
Enlightened came around, so perhaps one can fill in the blanks. But it would be baseless speculation, of course. I'm still sad about it every time a new Anderson film is cast.

Speaking of, unless I missed something, this is the second straight Anderson movie not to have Jason Schwatzman in the cast.

Schwartzman did help write the script to Isle of Dogs though.

Is the anticipation that this gets released in 2019? Spring 2020 would follow the previous pattern...

From the article:
As mentioned, filming has already begun on “The French Dispatch,” with the shoot expected to last well into 2019. While a release date hasn’t been announced, it’s widely speculated that the film will debut in France at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival

Why would a film that's already shooting wait until Cannes 2020 to debut? I bet we see it in October, unless we find out who exactly is "widely speculating"

That's right- and
Anderson said it would be divided into six episodes, so that's probably a separate stop-motion project.

Vincent Lacoste,
who just gave the best performance of the year, will also be in this, as will Guillaume Gallienne and Cecile de France

I haven't seen Cécile de France since Avenue Montaigne, gosh. More a testament to how few French films come out here and how little I've wanted to see Hereafter

And add to the tally Alex Lawther from the End of the Fucking World, Vincent Macaigne, and Félix Moati-- sounds like Anderson has seen Hippocrate, so hopefully Reda Kateb is next

I drove around Angoulême today but unfortunately found no signs of shooting. Mind you it is the Bande Dessinée Animation and Illustration festival this week so maybe everyone took time off to browse.

I googled Angoulême, looks lovely. I'm sure Anderson was spot on with his location desires (except maybe snow).
