"in the program book Dave Kehr stated "There's no new footage in this. It's just that we've edited for a better understanding of what order the film should be in. It's been tinted and there are some wonderful pseudo-hand-coloring sequences for the big fire at the end." Apparently the new restoration is based on recently uncovered censorship records and a French novelization from 1923 that contains descriptions of scenes cut by Universal days after the film opened."

The Wedding March just entered the public domain, so I imagine releases of various sorts will come out in the next year.

Now let’s not get our hopes up. Remember Greed? But seriously I do hope this does lead to The Wedding March getting released by Criterion after what, 10 years. The year is bright now, anything is possible, allegedly.

It definitely won’t help with Criterion because of their policies with original rights holders, but this is different from Greed as there is only one cut of the Wedding March whereas Greed only the shortest cut of it is on the public domain.

The big Stroheim issue for me is his performance in LA DANSE DE MORT, known in English as THE DANCE OF DEATH.

This play by Strindberg about marital discord was an immense influence on the work of Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams, to name but two.

It was filmed in 1967 with Laurence Olivier, a copy of which survives in only the very deepest, darkest recesses of the back channels. Ian McKellen toured internationally with his production in more recent decades.

There's a trailer on YouTube for the Stroheim version, which suggests that he is the main interest - Stroheim dances!

A restoration was announced a few years back, and a dvd was snuck out with virtually no publicity and no reviews. I can find it in only one place on the internet with a postage price alone of $50, which I may not be alone in finding an outrage. No English subtitles, of course.

Anyone know of a more accessible source?
