Yeah, Base is a lot cheaper because they deduct VAT, charge much less for shipping, and don't add tax.

I'm curious how many people might be going for the UHD vs. the BD editions

I'm going to pre-order from Diabolik, even if it costs a little bit more than Base/Zavvi, so I can avoid the risk of cancellation in the case of a sellout (and Diabolik always has excellent packing/customer service).

How likely is this to occur, the risk of cancellation?

I’m curious about cancellation too. Base is the only economically feasible option for me, so I guess I’m just SOL if they can’t come through.

Pre-orders are "guaranteed" to be filled per Second Sight's own Twitter account. I don't remember if they've said how limited the set is, but it looks like they are going to produce at least enough to fill all the pre-orders.

I guess that is the maximum they could keep Rubinstein distracted enough to make this happen! :P

**MARTIN update**
We've been looking into additional source elements and have materials to inspect. Unfortunately the lockdowns have delayed this process but we are hoping to pick up again soon. A release date is now being held until we are more sure of the timings. Thanks for bearing with us.

Trailer for their release of Walkabout

It's not even in full HD, so it's not going to provide any revelations into the new restoration but it does give a look at the package.

An error here - the children are only called Mary and Peter in the novel, which is quite different to the film in many ways. In the film, they're not named, not even in the end credits.

Beaver on Walkabout

Detail advances leaps and bounds over the Criterion, but the colours might cause some chin stroking...

I havent compared yet the colors but in terms of texture, it's a huge leap forward.

I'm looking forward to Second Sight's Blu of WALKABOUT. Based on the screen captures (which you always have to take with a grain of salt), it looks as if they were able to get more detail *and* color information going back to the negative in 4K. The greens are more vibrant, whereas they are limited in the older Criterion transfer. I'll need to see it in person ultimately, but so far it looks very promising. My only wish is that they could release a 4K UHD someday!

To their credit, Second Sight responded to queries about a 4K UHD when they announced Walkabout:
While we would have loved to release on 4K, sadly UHD production costs, from HDR grading to encoding, mastering charges and disc replication, are just too high and would be make it unviable for this release. We're constantly monitoring the UHD market and are hoping to release more on the format but have to be very selective with the titles we choose.
Judging by the fact that Vinegar Syndrome have managed to sell 12,000 UHD copies of Rad, I wonder if some labels aren't underestimating the market that will buy a 4K release for the sake of it being a 4K release (or maybe I just don't want to believe there are 12,000 fans of Rad). Though VS's in-house scanning and mastering facilities probably makes it less costly for them.

Again, remember there is no BD-only release of RAD, so anyone wanting to BD had to buy the UHD with it too.

And Rad has never had any previous DVD or Blu-ray release.

And Vinegar Syndrome also sold out thousands of matchbox size mini slips in their last sale...

The VS UHD BDs were done at Fidelity in Motion (same as the Second Sight titles). VS do handle the BDs themselves though.
