As director, the films The Last Day of Summer (the first even nominally avant-garde feature to be made in Poland since WW2) and Jump (aka Salto) deserve to be much better known outside Poland - the latter in particular showcases what may be Zbigniew Cybulski's greatest performance. But as literary advisor to the Kadr film unit, he was also instrumental in greenlighting some of the most important Polish films ever made, including the early work of Jerzy Kawalerowicz, Andrzej Munk, Andrzej Wajda, Walerian Borowczyk and Jan Lenica.

What are the chances of BBC4 repeating Pawel Pawlikowski's documentary about him as a tribute? I suspect "nil", but one can always dream.

Sad. I used to watch The Time Machine every time it turned up on TV in the 1970s. Given that he was born in Sydney, he didn't work much in Australia after the beginning of his career. When he returned to make The Picture Show Man in 1977, his character had to be rewritten to take account of the fact that he had lost his Aussie accent and gained an American one! He was also in Welcome to Woop Woop twenty years later, towards the end of his career.

Zabriske Point, The Birds, The Time Machine, the animated 101 Dalmatians are the films that I'll always remember him for (especially his pensive looks during the climaxes of the Hitchcock and Antonioni films! And his reaction sequence during the first time travel one), but his Doris Day comedies are fun too.

And also one of my personal favourite guilty pleasures, The VIPs (alongside Maggie Smith, Orson Welles, Margaret Rutherford, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor).

His performance in one of the finest TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, "...And When The Sky Was Opened", was a real tour de force.

He got in a nice final appearance as Winston Churchill in Inglourious Basterds.

I'll have to look for his essay work, I had no idea they even existed till today. His turns in Easy Money and Last Boy Scout were fantastic.

Seinfeld buffs will remember him as the hairdresser from The Smelly Car. He tries to help Elaine get rid of the odor in her hair by washing it with tomato sauce.

"Sauce me!"

He was a terrific standup, as well. The bits about the Iranian carpet salesman (the words "area rug" have caused me to laugh for years now) and his girlfriend's Gentile parents who thought a kibbutz was the last car on a train were particular favorites of mine.
