A shame. I loved him in Miami Vice; he was one of the most menacing villains in any movie I can recall (so many great little details -- that gum-chewing!), and his "exit" from the picture was a sublime cinematic moment from Mann.

I recall a pretty intense moment from The Devil's Rejects he took center stage in too. He's been immortalized in the Criterion Collection as well, as "Alcatraz Park Rangers" in The Rock.

He also had the funniest scene in The Devil's Rejects too (NSFW due to language!), with the correct response to an annoying Marx Brothers expert (seemingly a cross between Tarantino and Gene Shalit!) who disparages Elvis!

Perhaps his most memorable performance is the sidekick Otis to Michael Rooker's Henry in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. There's very much a sad Of Mice and Men relationship going on between the two characters in that film, with Otis as the touching, if still psychopathic, Lennie figure.

While I'm not a fan of the film he also played the part of the father Harry in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. And he's also in a small role as a thug in a fantastic Stuart Gordon film, the ultraviolent Verhoeven-esque sci-fi prison film Fortress (its the macho counterpart to the feminine Handmaid's Tale!)

She did so much great work, but man-oh-man, the set for Dorothy's apartment in Blue Velvet has this tactile sense to it that never ceases to amaze me. You just know what the carpet feels like, how dirty the kitchen is.

I was just thinking about him yesterday, and mentally going over some of his best routines. I think he was one of America's boldest (and funniest) comedians. His radio show only had six episodes before the network pulled the plug because it was too far-out, too risky, and (probably) too funny. Sad to see him go.

James Best, fondly remembered for "The Dukes of Hazzard," but he also played major roles in Sam Fuller's Verboten! and Shock Corridor.

No obits or confirmation have appeared online yet, but I'm hearing from several people that popular character actor Richard Dysart (The Thing, LA Law) has passed away.

This confirms it. Pale Rider is one of Eastwood's more underrated films, and he was great as the villain trying to run the people out of their homes.

And oddly enough making it a trifecta, Clint's prop guy Eddie Iona passed away recently as well.
