Renny Harlin directed Cliffhanger. Campbell did Vertical Limit though, which I've not seen, but can't believe is better since Chris O'Donnell is yer lead.

You are of course right about Cliffhanger, so I must be thinking of random scenes from Vertical Limit, or I'm simply losing my mind. (I've never seen either film.)

Edgar Wright seems an unlikely choice for this franchise, from both directions.

If Wright couldn't play nice on a weird movie for Marvel, how would he ever get through something straight-laced like Bond?

While I don't see it happening either, Bond would mean more to a British man of his age than any Marvel movie would so he would probably tend to play it safer if he got the gig.

It'll probably be a really boring choice like Rupert Sanders or Rupert Wyatt, boring British directors who know how to make a big budget mainstream movie on schedule and can handle 'action'.

I think over 50 years of Bond films would indicate that you’re right.

Supposedly Craig wants a big name director for his swansong so neither Sanders or Wyatt would meet that criteria.

Why don't they just go with Roger Michell as was rumored years ago? He clearly works well with Craig.

Soderbergh perhaps if he is free? Craig did Lucky Logan with him, and Soderbergh meets the criteria both of having done several studio pictures and being a widely admired director.

Plus he was attached to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. at one point, so he'd be game to tackle the genre. That would actually be pretty great, though I doubt post-retirement Soderbergh wants to go back to working in a system that will inevitably stifle his work.

...Soderbergh does seem at least a little plausible, in that he’d probably LOVE having to rush through pre-production in the next six weeks to start filming on time, but Eon seems generally hyper-reluctant for American filmmakers in general.

Bond films are usually given to British / Commonwealth directors, and besides, I doubt EON wants someone as unique as Soderbergh. My sense is that they will want to play it safe, now, and perhaps they can bring back Martin Campbell, who directed GoldenEye and Craig's Casino Royale. I did read last year that Campbell wasn't keen on working with the same Bond again, though, so this may be the Bond film he would most despise working on, as one would assume there will be some sense of conclusion to all the Craig films in it.

Honestly, I know this probably isn't a likely or realistic choice, but I'd like to see Christopher Nolan's take on Bond. For one thing, hopefully Nolan would bring IMAX 15/70 film to the table, but even if he chose, say, 65mm film instead, it would give the production a dignified look that would be both vintage and modern, and would suit the twenty-fifth film in a series over fifty years old. However, Nolan and his ideas are probably too expensive, and I imagine he's quite comfortable at Warner Bros., so it's probably just a pipe dream.

Very much approve of this choice. I'm very excited to see what Fukunaga does with his film.

Could be a masterstroke, although if he was pissed off with It, imagine how he'll go with Broccoli and Wilson and Purvis and Wade's crap scripts.

Maybe there will be a Bond-esque episode of Maniac where I'm like, "Oh, okay, got it, yeah."

Apparently there is at least one unusual action sequence in it, from what little I've heard in passing (I'm avoiding reviews since I'll be able to just watch it tomorrow)

Maybe we can get that orgy scene Fukunaga wanted to include in IT.

Having finished Maniac, I can confirm there's a (fake) one-shot action scene in one of the episodes that's very John Wick-ish but imaginative, even if it does cheat in a way the True Detective one didn't (though it would be impossible to actually do in one take). I can see a Bond producer wanting that kind of energy and creativity in staging for this series

Um. Having read two drafts that Fukunaga turned in for IT, I find this assertion odd. The orgy scene was nowhere in the script, what makes you think Fukunaga wanted to include it in the movie?

It exists only in the novel of IT. However having looked at the draft it ramped up the violence and implications of sexual violence so I imagine that's where at least some of the confusion comes from.

But Bond is only ever going to be PG-13/12 though so I don't really thing it needs to go any farther. I know some of the Bond films have been trimmed for content before though. Casino Royale is edited in the US release, mainly the torture scene.

As mentioned before, the coveted Criterion LaserDiscs of the first three Bond films were yanked soon after release due to Albert Broccoli's objection to the commentaries. They've since been ripped and distributed around the web, but here's a blog that discusses why Broccoli might've had a problem with them, and if you go to the comments, you'll find one of the participants and the commentaries' interviewer and editor chiming in.

One thing I heard was that someone said they saw Chris Blackwell smoke pot on the set and that was one thing that set EON off about it.
