Well at least it’s been restored - the available DVD print is abysmal. My esteem’s dwindled since watching for the 40s project but here were my thoughts then:
therewillbeblus wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2019 4:30 amBluebeard: Although I’ve seen some earlier Ulmer, as far as eligible films for this project
Detour has been my only experience, which sadly dropped significantly in my impressions after a revisit following Criterion’s release. Not a bad film, but not the great noir I remembered, this anomalous treat helped recover that disappointment. A serial killer genre picture that reaches levels of haunting vibrancy more common in the precode 30s (I was reminded of
The Black Cat and then remembered that was also Ulmer). Chilling and nasty, we thankfully spend a great deal of time with Carradine’s killer, but also the various women that populate his surroundings, all potential victims. Yet despite indications of innocence there’s a mysterious twinkle in each of them that instantly piques interest in every interaction, as if any one character might break all the rules and burn down the film. The unease that these people are capable of obstructing the rules of the game is only one twist Ulmer implements (intentionally or not) to keep us on edge, and the use of shadows and edits garnish suspense and impose qualities of horror and noir into this thriller. The print on the Alpha dvd is brutal and the sound is rough, but even through the haze the excellence was clear. A wonderful discovery that will surely lead me to seek more of Ulmer‘s work. Someone needs to restore this immediately.

I didn't think much of Detour either and sold my CC BD on but I remain a fan of The Black Cat.

No longer on the WSL list, but still available:
Clouzot: The Early Works (1931-1933)
The Stud (1978)
These were removed from the WSL listings by mistake per the KL Insider, and are now listed there again.

I see they discounted a load of titles on the WSL list further than from when they started. Missed out on $15!
Would have ordered
Una pura formalità if it had been discounted on the WSL list too.

My Gun is Quick.
Unavailable from Kino and OOP. You can likely find them at other retailers for a bit. Their licensing at times has a hard end date where they have to destroy any remaining stock, so it appears those titles will have hit that date soon.

Did not realize Kino Lorber also licensed and is releasing alongside I… comme Icare another conspiracy thriller from Verneuil, Mille milliards de dollars. They also released a pair of Dépardieu/Pierre Richard comedies directed by Francis Veber this summer that totally passed me by— I’ve only seen Le chèvre but enjoyed it for the broad comedy it is

Of the titles leaving Monday, I can recommend the Group, an odd and entertaining Young Women vs the Real World Film in the vein of the Best of Everything. What’s more, I recently learned Cahiers du Cinema loved it, though it’s not the kind of film you’d really expect them to enjoy. It’s also all of $5.99 right now

Retroactive is amazing if you’re interested in seeing James Belushi time travel with a Large Hadron Collider in Texas while simultaneously involved in a violent, Kalifornia-esque road trip odyssey
Cattle Annie and Little Britches is probably worth getting, too. It’s a very softened version of a surprisingly gritty novel that was inspired by actual teen girls who became outlaws in the American West. Amanda Plummer is great in it
The Landlord is stunning, of course. Bill Gunn, Hal Ashby, and Gordon Willis on one picture. You should already own it

Race for the Yankee Zephyr (aka Treasure of the Yankee Zephyr) is a fun adventure film from New Zealand with a memorable performance by Bruno Lawrence as one of the villain's henchmen. This was a massive hit in 1983 in the Soviet Union, as the country starved for foreign entertainment. I was lucky to catch it at just the right age of 10. After my recent re-watch on the Kino's Blu-ray, I am glad to say it aged rather well.

Completely random association for this film: in college I researched children’s film clubs in America during WWII and that film in particular was widely derided by the children polled, who greatly preferred the “adult” entertainment of Mrs Miniver

The consensus on that film, if there is one, seems to be that the film was trying unsuccessfully to imitate Disney and moved away from what had been the Fleischers' strengths, tonally and visually.

Came home from a trip to find my sale order of 10 blu rays waiting for me, but shipped in 10 separate large boxes. Kino must have lost most of what I paid to shipping costs! I've never seen anything like this.
