In ORNETTE: MADE IN AMERICA, you see him conducting a performance of SKIES OF AMERICA, but the arrangements sound different. I
wonder if a live recording of that will ever become available.
sort of a tangent, but: the Prime Time gig at the Caravan of Dreams, also documented in Shirley Clarke's film, was recorded and made into a record, appropriately titled
Opening the Caravan of Dreams. unfortunately, like a number of Ornette Coleman albums, it's out of print.

Confirmed by Tim Lucas on his Facebook page. Ducommun was terrific in
The 'Burbs and I recall him being seemingly ubiquitous in the early 1990s, appearing in several films in a row that my family took me to see (his role in
Blank Check being particularly memorable).

Sad news. He helped make one of my
favorite scenes in Groundhog Day.

And of a Korean War novel that was adapted into a Robert Mitchum film that I'm quite fond of (though I do have a soft spot for aircraft pilot-masking-love triangle films that goes back to something like Only Angels Have Wings!),
The Hunters. Though I'm not sure I'd believe the claims of the trailer that it was "the
first great spectacle of the jet age", given that it came after both Strategic Air Command and Jet Pilot!
I'm particularly curious to see the single film that James Salter directed, the UK produced, Italian-set film Three from 1969, starring Charlotte Rampling and Sam Waterston, and featuring Gillian Hills (best known from her title role in Beat Girl from 1960) further down the cast list.

Considering everything
Clementa Pinckney did with his abbreviated life, it's pretty horrendous that the racist asshole loser who killed him is now the better known and more recognizable person nationwide.

Very sadly, this has been confirmed. James Horner's friend and personal assistant Sylvia Wells has issued this statement on her Facebook, which has been spread by much of the film music community this evening:
"A great tragedy has struck my family today, and I will not be around for a while. I would like some privacy and time to heal. We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road. Love Sylvia."
Awful news.

Might not be as high profile as many of them, but his score for Jumanji stands out in my memory as one that was adventurous and playful and totally befitting the film it was written for. It added a sense of danger and excitement that only great film music can. RIP, how sad.

I wouldn't say he's my favorite composer, but I like a lot of his work. The most recent one being
The New World.
48 HRS.,
Aliens,
Field Of Dreams,
Sneakers,
Clear And Present Danger,
Apollo 13 and
A Beautiful Mind are all staples on my iPod as well. Besides "My Heart Will Go On", another claim to fame would be that
this cue from Aliens is arguably one of the most-used pieces of music in trailers or TV spots ever.

He had a lot of great scores: Titanic, Braveheart, The Mask of Zorro to name a few of my favorites. It's actually his work from Searching for Bobby Fischer, though, that I find so deeply moving.
The chess scene in the park is a particular favorite for how stirring it was, but I always felt the greatest swell of emotion for me comes in a very simple piece of composition in the final scene as Joe Mantegna and Joan Allen watch their son walk to the park with his friend as they discuss chess, culminating in the beautiful line, "Can I tell you a secret? I'm gonna tell you a secret. You're a much stronger player than I was at your age." He'll be dearly missed.

Was just thinking that if Criterion gets The New World, it would be the first release by them to feature his music.

Ditto on Field of Dreams and The New World. Also enjoyed his score for Cocoon and especially Glory.

Let's not forget his Star Trek work either. He's the perfect sound to engaging with that series love of curiosity.
