Re: Spectrum Release of Joao Cesar Monteiro 10 Films

If I've compared the contents correctly, the only films missing from Spectrum's Monteiro set are the 4 early films on the Lusomundo Os Quatro Primeiros Filmes DVD:

- Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1969)
- Quem Espera por Sapatos de Defunto Morre Descalço (1970)
- Fragmentos de um Filme-Esmola (1972)
- Que Farei Eu Com Esta Espada?(1975)

TBH, just about all I remember of the Lusomundo DVD set, which I watched during April 2013, are Montiero's comments, in one of the extras, when asked whether he thought Branca de Neve (IIRC) had any similarity with Derek Jarman's Blue! But, my policy is to replace DVDs if the Blu-ray or 4K UHD price is reasonable (IMO), so I've pre-ordered the Spectrum set.

When I started the online order process, the cost was shown as €120 plus €5 for delivery. This changed to €100 when the system noted the UK shipping address, and removed EU VAT, plus €10 for UK delivery. Of course, if the parcel doesn't slip through the net, I'll have to pay 20% UK VAT, plus a processing fee, on delivery.

With any luck, by the time this set arrives, I will have finished watching Louis Feuillade: The Complete Crime Serials (1913-1918).

As expected VAT is not removed when shipping in EU. But the shipping is only €5, and I got a €6 discount for signing up to a newsletter.

What really impressed me is that I emailed Spectrum in English at 9.30 on Sunday morning, asking if they can hold the shipping until January, as I will be on a riverboat in Indonesia. And they replied 1 minute later that this is not a problem. This must be a small company, and with service like that, well worth supporting.

Has anyone's Monteiro set shipped yet? My box is still in the preparation phase, ordered sometime in December.

I too ordered this in August. It's been in preparation ever since. :(
There's a comment on blu-ray.com: "...Spectrum is notorious for delays."

Yes, their projects are released 3 months late in average. I can onlh advice checking regularly their product pages, as these are bound to get updated at some point, and Metaluna Store facebook page, as they post pics of all their products additions, and they receive Spectrum titles pretty much as soon as they're physically materialising. Nothing there yet = not released yet.

I looked at the product page a few days ago and the release date was a hopeful late January 2025... today it has been updated to February 27!

Yes, they've tweeted a couple of weeks ago that they had to delay to late February all of their december 24 and january 25 releases.

The Monteiro set from Spectrum is now listed as March 20, 2025... on croise les doigts!

Edit: Now it's April 11... I guess moving the day up earlier in the month is promising!

I’m still waiting on my Shanghai Blues 4K from Spectrum. Ordered in October, delay after delay and now the release date supposedly was at the end of March. Still nothing shipped and they deliver empty promises like “We’ll ship on Monday” or “you’ll get a tracking number tomorrow”. Other retailers have their new items in stock. Terrible customer service and business practices.

My Monteiro box arrived this morning. (I'm East Coast, U.S.) There's no booklet or insert, as Peacock and mrb404 mentioned on the previous page. Packaging is plain, a hard box -- a different design than pictured on Spectrum's site -- holding four blu cases holding two discs each. The box, cases, and discs are all marked Region B but I spot-checked the first couple discs and they worked in my players set to Region A.

Of what I checked, special features (all talking heads) are not subtitled. The shorts and features are, though there are full songs near the start of Veredas and Silvestre with untranslated lyrics.

I recall reading somewhere that an American label was planning to release a Monteiro box in 2025 with more films in it than the Spectrum box. Am I right? Is there any update on that?

Cinema Guild have acquired the restorations but there have been no confirmed home video plans. I believe that they're planning on theatrical releases first and, considering we're still waiting on a physical release of P.P. Rider after its theatrical release in Sep 2023, I would not be surprised if it were 2026 or later before we see any Monteiro Blu-Rays from them.

That's a shame! I was hoping to ditch most of my fully-subtitled Lusomundo DVD set, but I will probably have to keep it all now (but repackaged to save shelf space - I think I have a spare 12-disc case in the loft).

Haven’t even heard of this film before you mentioned it but the BD came out via Leonine, formerly Universum Film. They’re like the German KL, which means okay / serviceable BDs and usually disappointing 4Ks. Did you watch a HD copy of the film and did it look nice? If yes, then you can expect that master to have ended up on the BD and have a fine presentation for your collection.

I just rented the DVD again (fabulous movie, btw - nothing to add to domino's praise) but I'll take any HD upgrade. Thanks!

Here’s a recommended shop to order: https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/movie/detail/- ... um/1157104. I’ve read more than once on the other forum that Amazon DE charge exorbitant shipping for US buyers whereas JPC is relatively cheap. The only disadvantage is that overseas packages apparently take some time and tracking is either limited or unavailable.

And thanks for the recommendation! I’ll pick up a copy as well.

Thanks nicolas, I'll decide between this and rarewaves (FYI you need to enter its German title in order to get a result there!)

Yeah, their search system is unnecessarily convoluted. What I do often is use the UPC (in this case 0886979366893) to get to the item straight away.

Also while I'm here, is the Eagle Megalopolis 4K supposed to be the superior import? It's the cheapest option and only one not 'sold out'
