I don't think that either "Le pont du nord" or "Duelle" are too short. They are what they are and they are perfect in themselves. Not every Rivette film depends on a certain extended length; that specific feel of liberty (which we, spectators, feel when connected to his greatest works) doesn't always need to develop within "time" (big word), like in "Out 1", "L'amour fou" or "Céline et Julie". In other films there are other gateways.

I just started to download Out 1 with English subs.

There are other gateways for sure. I don't mean to ignore the other elements of Rivette's cinema outside of their length. But Out 1 (good luck, bearcuborg!) is the perfect example of how effective the element of time is in Rivette's work. I find that the length of the films is, in itself, a political statement addressed to, and for the benefit of, the spectator -- a way of forcing them out of the alienating stupor induced by the restricting time elements of labor. Being able to shake that off, sit back, and not consider the temporal/economic expense of, say, 13 hours of free-form creativity is a big part of what makes Rivette's films not only enjoyable for me, but also relieving. Its one thing to show the audience freedom, quite another to actually make them feel free.
That said, I can't argue that Le pont du nord and Duelle are both exceptionally satisfying films without that element.

Criterion on their Facebook page poses an open question asking how many people would like to see Out 1 released onto DVD.

It might be half-hearted, but this is probably the closest we'll ever get to Criterion organising a Rivette petition, so vote early and often!

I wonder if using a social networking site is the best way to ferret out people willing to purchase an extremely long and old experimental film.

Could've been worse. It could've been a "film yourself doing an interpretive dance inspired by
Out 1 and post it on YouTube" competition.
But they've just done that.

Every entry featuring primal drum beats and intercut with Michele Moretti admonishing the dancers for not really listening to the music, or each other.

Just got the new UK DVD of Joan the Maid -- and watched part 1. While one can imagine a better looking release, it is great to have this complete and subbed. I really loved the way how part 1 flowed -- much better than the butchered US version. It really did _feel_ shorter than the shorter version.

Did they pose that question on their wall? I don't see it there and was not updated about it being posted in the first place.

Look for the comment by Kristina beginning, 'Oh, Criterion Collection, I love you so'.

Yes, totally different pacing, probably as dramatically different than the two versions of "La belle Noiseuse". Michael, did you already pop in Pt.2 for a quick look? Over in the AE thread there were reports that Pt.2 looked significantly worse, which kept me from ordering the discs yet, not having seen any caps or any online review (which is suspicious in itself, I'd say). I just want another opinion on how 'bad' Pt.2 really looks...

I really wonder why they used amazon to determine whether they should release "Howards End" on Blu and Facebook for Rivette; perhaps the plan was to get the desired results: an emphatic 'Yes' for Ivory and an equally emphatic 'No' (or rather, not enough response) for Rivette. Which would give them a good reason not to do "Out1". Aargh.

I'll start part 2 of Joan tonight (but may not finish all 3 hours). ;~}
No, I didn't look yet (and will try to be philosophical no matter what I find) -- as the chances of any other subbed release of the "real" version are approximately zero -- and I would want this no matter how it looked.

Exactly the answer I expected from a lover of 30s and 40s Japanese films

. Tell us nevertheless, please, once you've seen Pt.2. And I fear you're very right about the chances of getting this subbed in any other form..

Part 1 looked good enough for me as well, but I haven't looked at part 2 yet. I'm not very picky, so I can't imagine it would be bothersome unless it were WAY worse than part 1.
Does anyone know anything about
this? Its been up on Amazon since the beginning of September.

Great find, Tartarlamb, if it's not a bootleg and if it's complete. The runtime of 120 min. NTSC sounds fishy. My recording from TV (PAL) runs 128 mins.

That Noroit cover looks dreadful -- if this wasn't an official Amazon title (rather than a marketplace one), I'd definitely guess bootleg. Who know?

Regarding Joan - I thought disc 2 looked the same as disc 1. Again, nothing great but better than we've ever or had (or will ever likely have).
As for Noroit, I ordered it but then cancelled due to the fact that it looked like it was not subtitled. Maybe I missed something but for some reason I just had that feeling.

As I recall, the French release of Noroit was part of a box set that also included Duelle (and no subs, even Frecnh ones). I didn't ever hear about a stand-alone release of either of these films.

Probably a good call. There's a few other dvds on Amazon from this, err, company (Les productions Jacques Roitfeld -- which I think is the actual production company for the films, or at least Roitfeld produced every film in their catalogue), and several of them say "French only." Another company called "Cite Films" is occasionally listed. Anyway, sounds fishy.
Anyone bold enough to jump in?
