The snowy look of the film is the best thing about it, so this is a good choice for a Blu-ray upgrade, and as a film it fits in well with the typical western focused on the impact of the railroad. I still confuse this with the Proposition to this day, though, even though the films are nothing alike!

I’m a big fan of Winterbottom, mostly because he’s so adept at switching gears with his various projects, and yet still somehow seems to integrate his political convictions and personality into even the most genre-based of his works. I love his swings, even when I ultimately consider some of his projects failures.

I do, however, remember coming out of the theatre with this one and feeling it was a little flat, though it did have a breathtaking image of a fully-built house being moved through the wilderness by a team of men and horses which was worth the price of admission alone.

Perhaps I was just in the wrong mood and it’s worth a revisit.

Their previous release was on a 25GB disk. In general I’ve found that their seemingly inexplicable re-issues have been to put the re-issue on 50GB discs, perhaps with a new encode.

Netflix is doing the sequel, per the deal they have with Sandler now. He’s made the most of it but I kind of think this would do good in theaters now.

I never got the broad appeal of Adam Sandler. To be fair, his comedic work made his film career possible and arguably makes outliers like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems all the more interesting, but on its own it's really hit-or-miss with the misses being horrendously bad. I had a classmate who used to listen to one of his comedy albums all the time, and it made Sandler seem like a real asshole in private. Off the top of my head, there's one recurring bit about beating the shit out of someone, including one where he savagely beats up a maintenance man, and that's it, that's where all the fun is supposed to come from and we're supposed to laugh hysterically at some cartoonish depiction of a working class guy howling in pain. Then there's a sketch that bizarrely ends with Sandler raping a girl he interviews on the street. In fairness, he does seem to be a nice guy in public.
