Surprisingly, Kino announced this morning a 4K release of The Night of the Juggler, a film that never even made it to DVD. Does Columbia still own the rights? Was their issues with music licensing? It’s a personal favorite of mine and one I’ve seen on 35mm and VHS numerous times. Cliff Gorman is one of those character actors who instantly elevates a movie, and love him here as a weasley, resentful, bitter, casually racist New Yorker who feels the world owes him something. The intro where he draws a happy face on his breakfast with ketchup tickles me everytime. It’s a real frenetically paced thriller and one I think about often.

It's apparently owned by either a small company or the film's producers alongside a few other films (or this status has recently changed from the company back to the producers). Blu-ray.com forum members are trying to gather various context stated over time. Here's what Fun City rep Jah13 said about it a few years back:

It’s a white whale that many labels would love to get and have tried for. The rights holder is not a traditional film company, but a much larger multinational corporation, and my understanding from those who have gotten a toe in the door, is that film sub-licensing is way too small potatoes for them to bother with.
...
My sense is it hasn't gotten that far and what this company is looking for to make it worth their while is way out of line with what anyone could pay. They also don't have that many titles to begin with. It may be just JUGGLER and FOOLIN' AROUND.

And here's a summary of what Tarzi said in a podcast recently about a small library acquisition, which many are now concluding is the one The Night of the Juggler is coming from:

Frank is currently about to sign on a deal for an independently owned film, owned by the producers of that film that's been one of his all time Holy Grails - the rights for that film were very questionable, so that's why this hasn't happened until now. The same producers owned 2-3 other films, and he picked up a couple of other small gems including one "really good kind of a horror film". None of these films have been on any home media format since VHS.

Juggler was acquired independently. My boss has been trying to acquire it for decades. Walt Olsen would've been very happy too.

haven't seen it in eons, hope it holds up. personally remember it being as strong as the first movie, but maybe I was way off on that

I haven’t seen either in some time but I recall both films were much funnier than anything else coming out of SNL or its various stars at the time. This is the one with the parodies of the Doors too, right?

Yep. This film has one unbelievably great meta gag about car chases and why they always seem to involve glass panes and fruit crates

Saw this in the theater when it came out and encouraged a friend to go with me based on how much I liked Croupier. My friend still cites it as the worst movie she has ever seen in the theater. I didn't like it either. Dreary and unpleasant for sure. Yet I want to see it again to see if maybe there is something that I missed 20+ years ago. Hodges' body of work is...wayward. Maybe I'll do a double feature of this and Morons From Outer Space.

I've never understood the critical drubbing this film got. I think because it had Clive Owen and Mike Hodges was directing,
there were certain expectations that the film would be something along the same lines as Croupier and it wasn't (saw
it in the theater back in '03 or '04 and I remember someone in the audience remarking on it at the time). Personally, it sort
of reminds me of something closer to late Jean-Pierre Meville. There's also a nasty edge to it that's more in line with the
nihilistic tone of Get Carter.

I'd love to see someone restore Hodges' two early television films Rumor and Suspect. Network did put them out in
pretty poor condition a few years ago, but I could easily see the BFI doing it as a Flipside release. Suspect in particular is
an amazing film.

I like the film, though prefer Croupier slightly more. I guess both the Mike Hodges films have to be placed into context of being a kind of response to the Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn 'laddish British gangster' trend of the late 90s-early 2000s with Lock Stock, Snatch and Layer Cake et al (my favourite of all these is still the one that came before Lock, Stock - 1997's Face). That kind of splintered off into all sorts of directions, with the football holligan films such as The Football Factory (and Elijah Wood(!?!?) being enticed by violence in Green Street) and the other Nick Love 'working class gangster' films; the 'true life crime' films like Essex Boys mostly based around the Rettendon murders; of course Sexy Beast stands out by itself; and eventually the big guns came in with old school (often period) gangster tales. Along with Terence Stamp in the The Limey, the really big one that deserves a good special edition some time is Malcolm McDowell's late period return to prominence in 2000's Gangster No. 1.

I'd hazard a guess that McDowell turning up in I'll Sleep When I'm Dead has something to do with that previous film, and Hodges coming back to do a crime film decades after Get Carter has a kind of 'showing the kids of today how its done' aspect about it, at least in its marketing. It proves to be a more melancholic film than that. But it probably suffers from getting lost in the middle of the cycle and not being quite so flippant and flashy with the attitude to crime as most of the other films surrounding it at the time were being.

Rampage would be quite a feat, as the 1987 cut is MGM, while the 1992 one that I won’t watch is Paramount via Miramax

Rampage is such a hard film to watch. It’s a quality work for sure, and has great performances from Michael Biehn and Grace Zabriskie, but it’s tremendously sad
