Why would someone prefer not having commentary tracks accompany the film? It's not as if an AC3 track takes up any significant space.

I'm sure they'd still put the commentaries on the UHD disc as Kino and others have done. I was pretty sure they were saying all other supplementary material would be only on the Blu-ray.

Yes, it's likely to mean "video extra features" only.

Although I can see the argument that if you're only half-watching the film anyway, it's not crucial that it be the ultra high-quality version

The Quarterly Guessing track ended with the posting of several Criterion UHD's that included "The Red Shoes".
When I did not see this on Amazon, I checked Criterion's own site, and found it missing.
What happened to it?
I am sorry if I missed some communication on the subject.

The six titles were just teased with that first announcement. The only ones from that first announcement that have been officially announced with street dates are Mulholland Dr, Menace II Society, and Citizen Kane. The remaining three will be announced in upcoming months.

The Learning Tree is only a 2K restoration, but One Night in Miami... is puzzling. Maybe the Amazon license doesn't cover UHDs?

At least The Red Shoes will have Dolby Vision HDR.

I imagine it’s coming down to economics. They probably want to see how the opening batch performs so they can gauge what titles should get the UHD treatment. Also, Criterion doesn’t use a limited edition sales model, so being reckless with putting out every title means they end up eating a big cost as I’m sure they will manufacture more than 3,000 units.

I thought it'd be worthwhile compiling a list of all CC releases that had a 4k restoration thus far and are therefore likely to get the UHD upgrade. (if someone else wants to do J-Z, feel free to do so; I won't have more time to complete the list for another 24 hours) This does not include titles that Sony or others have already released in UHD

Any word whether The Criterion Channel will start streaming UHD for the titles they are releasing? Netflix, Prime, HBOMax all have certain titles in UHD if your setup supports it.

A Hard Day's Night is also with Dolby Vision HDR, meaning the "some titles" comment about HDR either has changed or refers to future unannounced/teased titles.

They really got those 6 announced UHDs out much faster than I expected. Curious to see if they keep up the pace of at least 2 UHDs a month (except for the traditionally slow month of December.)

Actually, it seems on par with the impression the original annoucement gave, which was that these 6 UHDs were to be pretty much all released by the end of the year (and in the end, it will be quite close to it).

It does give a timeframe for The Piano's 4k restoration though, which isn't finished yet at this moment (hence why the movie will be shown tomorrow at Lyon only from its current 2k restoration instead, and TF1 confirmed the 4k restoration is being done at the moment).

if I remember right, the initial announced slate of blurays took almost a year to get out there. not only did CC get all the UHDs out, but even snuck a bonus one (Uncut Gems) in there

going forward I'll be curious what the balance of new title to upgrade 4Ks is. and curious how many BD upgrades we will see. La Strada thankfully saw one, but at the same time that's a boxset separation, so I will be cautious

I hope it's just a reflection of doing these initial 7 UHDs quickly, and not that DVD-to-BD upgrades will be slowed down even further, as there are some real key titles that would be most welcome in 1080p HD. Of course, there could even be a few DVD-to-4K UHD + BD upgrades for some of those titles if they time it right, which may be factoring in to their decisions right now.

If anything, yet to be upgraded DVD titles should be top of the pile to go UHD vs stuff already on BD because the more cautious shoppers will be less reluctant to upgrade, if they even own such old DVDs in the first place.

The blu-ray.com review of Uncut Gems notes the commentary track is on the 4K disc, so they'll probably do that with all of them.
