Alan Rudolph revealed that
Choose Me will be getting a Criterion release in this
interview:
Criterion picked up "Choose Me"—40 years later, but I'll take it. That is my first film with them, and they do really good work. We have retimed that, and man is that good. They told me they wanted "Remember My Name" but that there is some kind of legal thing involving the music. Now, everyone involved with the music is dead, and the music wasn't pop music—it was Alberta Hunter and her blues tunes. It is probably just some lawyer who got lazy and didn't do something, but that has stopped it from anybody who has tried to pursue it. Nobody will tell me what the issue is—they just say it is a legal thing.
On Remember My Name:
"1978 legal documents I have read—the contract for Alberta Hunter’s music for the film, from the Robert Altman papers in the Special Collections at the University of Michigan—suggest that the owners of the film had the rights to her music as far as theatrical exhibition and television broadcast went. But the royalties due to Hunter for exhibiting her music in the film in what are in the contract called “Video Records”—i.e., physical home video formats (which in 1978 were not yet standardized)—would have to be renegotiated at a later date, as the language in the contract makes clear. There is no document in these archives to indicate those rights to exhibiting Hunter’s music on home video editions of the film were ever worked out."
"according to Rudolph, only one known 35mm print still exists"
https://www.perisphere.org/2024/06/21/i ... name-1978/
"the contractual woes worsened with the death of Alberta Hunter, who did not leave behind a will, causing her publishing rights to go in limbo for a long time. Even today, despite both the studio and the record company being under the same corporate parent, Sony Pictures has not been able to come to terms with Sony Music for re-clearing Hunter’s tracks, and while the individual songs can be found for licensed streaming on YouTube, the soundtrack album has never been reissued on LP or CD. That is wonderful news, but his claim about Sony/Columbia retaining a single print of Remember My Name is nonsense. They have the OCN, and beautiful prints have been struck in recent years and distributed. Robert Altman would say the same thing about MGM and Images, which was also disproven

After a nearly two and half year hiatus, last month they posted a new episode of Lee Kline's podcast (
an interview with Robert Harris)

Wow, I hope that they use that for cover of Il Grido.

A
new 4K restoration of Brazil is screening next month. I can see an upgrade being announced soon.

I can see Brazil being held until either July or November.
I listened to the "new" Dead Pixel podcast and it was recorded at least a year ago, because Harris mentioned he hoped Criterion would do something with the restored All That Money Can Buy and Lee Kline said it was in the works, but would say when. No hints or news about upcoming releases was given.

We can stop guessing The Conversation coming from Criterion. Lionsgate announced a straight port of the Studio Canal tat edition from the UK with the tape cassette for December 17. Artwork and specs are the same, only difference is the Lionsgate logo replacing the Studio Canal one on the packaging. I'll get the regular UK edition from Orbit once they've got more supplies.

I've seen two separate articles in prominent publications about Sideways in the past two weeks. 20-year anniversary. Studio-released blu ray is old, unimpressive, and out of print. Criterion 4K announcement coming next month?

So is Criterion just not interested in releasing Wes Anderson films anymore? Cuz they have a 10-year-long backlog

I'm sure they'd love to at least upgrade some of his films to 4K for sales, but I believe he's usually involved in supervising the transfers so assume that's what's holding things up

I think he has just been too busy, starting one film after another.

I'm a huge Payne fan but don't like this movie, I'd be far more in for
About Schmidt, though I do recognize there's demand for
Sideways. people just forget how good
About Schmidt is

I'd really love
French Dispatch (as a huge defender of the film!) and
Asteroid City in 4K but I know it's definitely Anderson holding it up as others have noted. he's been plowing through making new movies, which is super admirable

I rewatched Sideways a few weeks ago, after not seeing it since its release. Aside from the appalling behaviour displayed by the main characters, I found it highly entertaining, and I was amazed at how good Paul Giamatti is in it. Just brilliant.
I agree with you - About Schmidt is terrific, and Jack Nicholson is amazing in it.

I posted
twelve years ago about Spike and
my social media interactions with him about
25th Hour. a 4K would certainly be worth the wait, ditto the awesome editions Criterion always seem to deliver for his films
looking back at that post, it's even wilder we got
Bamboozled before
25th Hour. Criterion didn't even have a Warner deal at the time of that post!!
