I think it probably will be a UHD set. Next year is the 30th anniversary of Bottle Rocket, so I could see the set to tie into that anniversary.

A box kinda makes sense being that they've held off releasing any of the titles on UHD

What I most dread about this release is the packaging. Kane looked nice but was impractical as hell. Assuming these are dual format, I'd advocate for 10 two-hub slimcases in a sturdy box. But we're probably going to get slots again. And surely they're going to do standalone BDs for Anderson's most recent films that they didn't get to yet, if only to avoid complaints from the Blu ray only crowd.

Not just that group, but what about (the majority of?) their customers who already own 80% of this thing.. I'm not going to purge and upgrade eight discs for this box, I'm sorry, and I can't imagine I'm alone

I actually haven’t updated any of mine from DVD so I’m into this idea.

I can’t imagine that they’d repackage that many BDs again, particularly after their last big box set (CC40). The BD rate probably depends on how many of Anderson’s films can be restored in 4K from the OCNs. I’d say all of them until Darjeeling Limited is likely and if we’re lucky Moonrise Kingdom if they still conformed the negative at that point. Fantastic Mr. Fox, Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs were 2K-finished, so these would likely end up BD-only.

You could still do a nice looking upscale for UHDs of the films that were finished at 2K. Anyone know Anderson is keen on or doesn't like HDR and Dolby Vision? If the 4Ks were to turn out SDR only, then the set becomes less attractive except for the modern scans of his older films. The Rushmore and Tenenbaum BDs are showing their age the most.

Absolutely. Sadly Criterion haven’t yet jumped on that train and only work with 4K DIs even though upscales with the wider color gamut of 4K would greatly benefit the films.
Re. HDR: The French Dispatch is 4K SDR on digital whereas Asteroid City has HDR / DV, however the end credits don’t list the usual Dolby Vision - Atmos credit, so it’s probably a grade Universal imposed. Could be that his DP, Robert Yeoman, also plays a part in this. He last supervised Gus van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy in 4K and they graded in SDR.

Many, many 4K UHDs are for 2K finished films. It's not really as much of a problem as people think.
I feel like Anderson's films have a higher chance of individual listings being drip fed out at a quicker pace than films from the Bergman and Fellini box sets have been. Especially since the first eight are already available individually on DVD & BD.

Wes Anderson obviously sells, so I can see Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun be released individually prior to the set or simultaneously. The UHD box-set will still sell.
I'm less confident of ever seeing a standalone blu-ray of Hour of the Wolf or The Passion of Anna.

And that pool is dwindling fast, with rights to lots of DVD titles now lost to other labels/companies. Of the still in-print DVDs I could see these jump directly to a 4K UHD as newer restorations have since become available: the René Clair films, And God Created Woman, I Know Where I'm Going!, The Shop on Main Street, Closely Watched Train, The Last Wave, Loves of a Blonde, Pépé le moko, Il posto/I fidanzati, Salvatore Giuliano, Stray Dog, the Ozu films, Unfaithfully Yours, Viridiana, Hands Over the City, Sweet Movie, Classe tous risques, La ronde, Le deuxième souffle. But I imagine some of them will be deemed unworthy of the ultimate format.
Another title that I was surprised to see that still hasn't been upgraded from DVD is Thieves' Highway. For some reason I thought this was. Maybe this will be the first Dassin to get a UHD upgrade, unless Disney has something to say about that

Per Bill Hunt from today's The Digital Bits post...
Now then, the big news today is that the Criterion Collection is working on a 10-film Wes Anderson Collection for release later this year!
Full disclosure… this is something that I’ve actually known was coming for several months, but I’ve held my tongue about it for reasons that will become obvious in a minute.
But Anderson himself has recently confirmed the existence of this project in a new interview connected to his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, with a magazine called Little White Lies.
Specifically, what he’s said is: “I’ve always tried to treat them [meaning his films] as a body of work to some degree, and even now we’re doing a thing with the Criterion Collection, they’re releasing my first ten movies as a box set. I want these movies to all sit together as a set.”
Of course, the films in question are:
Bottle Rocket (1996)
Rushmore (1998)
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
Isle of Dogs (2018)
The French Dispatch (2021)
And I can indeed confirm now, per our studio sources, that this box set will include newly remastered 4K Ultra HD versions of each of these films.
Now... here’s why I’ve had to hold my tongue about this release: Other than the first film, Bottle Rocket, all of these are Disney-controlled titles. Suffice it to say, I had no desire to jeopardize this release by leaking details too early!
All but two of those films—Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch—are already part of the Criterion Collection on Blu-ray. So those two films will obviously join the Collection now as well on both formats.
Given that Anderson has started talking about this, I would expect some kind of official acknowledgement from Criterion sooner rather than later. The company has already announced their August slate, so the earliest this is likely to street is September. Stay tuned for further details!

The lab that was behind the restorations for all of the Sara Gómez titles has confirmed that Criterion will be releasing them all in a boxset:
Digitized, Subtitled, and Restored documentaries submitted to Criterion. They launched on their streaming service on Feb 1, 2025. A boxed DVD is forthcoming. This is the result of 4 years of work undertaken in the Vulnerable Media Lab by six graduate students, two post-doctoral fellows and three undergraduates. Afro-Cuban filmmaker, Sara Gómez made 19 documentaries and a feature film in Cuba before her very untimely death at 34 in 1974. Her feature film was restored recently by Arsenal Berlin.

Criterion are credited in the restoration notes for the new 4K restoration of A History of Violence that is screening at this year's Ritrovato festival, which means we can expect a new 4K disc coming soon.

As mentioned in the other forum, Criterion/Janus also did the restoration for ROBERT WILSON AND THE CIVIL WARS, which is also premeiring at the Ritrovato festival. I've never heard of this, and it appears most people haven't either since only 7 people have this logged on IMDb and 17 on Letterboxd.

What a long time in the works -- it's one of three Howard Brookner features, and his nephew's been working to make the restoration happen since 2012, even before Criterion released Burroughs in 2014.
the CIVIL warS is one of those semi-legendary pieces of postmodern theatre: it was intended to premiere as part of the 1984 Olympics, but funding disintegrated and only sections of it have ever been staged. One of those sections also holds the distinction of being one of those works that was unanimously recommended by the jury for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but the board overturned that and issued no prize in 1986. (Which also happened with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Gravity's Rainbow for the fiction prize -- stout company)
Robert Wilson is always...distinctive, and footage of both his works and him building them in rehearsal and on stage is always welcome, but I'm curious how this distinguishes itself as a documentary and more than just a regular artist-makes-art programme. The only way I can see Criterion making a case for putting this on disc would be pairing it with the recording of The Black Rider (which is on YouTube from a VHS source), especially since they're still sitting on remarkable sui generis documentaries from queer directors like Thank You and Goodnight, which landed on the Channel nearly five years ago. That said, cut to me bouncing in my seat if this restoration gets even a one-night showing in Chicago this year or next.

Any reason to believe they have last year’s new restoration of Abraham’s Valley or am I just going to be disappointed with a release never seeing the light of day?
