Her dress looks great even when you can’t read it, so there’s still that
LQ said she looked "like fennel, but in a good way"

Natalie Portman had her dress embroidered with the names of female directors who weren't nominated this year, which begs the question: what female directors has Natalie Portman worked with during her storied career? Have there been any? Why is she making herself the face of this if she's at risk of being seen as a total hypocrite?
Well, she directed herself in that film no one saw a few years back
She produced that shitty recent documentary about how terrible it is that women directors don't get work in Hollywood, where she bemoaned the fact that she'd never worked with a female director (apart from herself).
Honey, you have your own production company. You can greenlight any film you want. You could at least have asked one of the dozens of fantastic female documentary filmmakers that are currently active TO DIRECT YOUR FUCKING DOCUMENTARY ABOUT LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR FEMALE DIRECTORS, BUT INSTEAD YOU CHOSE SOME GUY, WHO DID A COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS JOB!

Also, again, Lynne Ramsay.

This is gonna sound mean, but is there a single decent movie that Sam Mendes has been involved with?

Revolutionary Road is a good movie. I've heard the Bond is good too.

Prediction Competition Update (rushed tabulation and probable errors disclaimer):
Unbelievably, with seven categories to go, Apperson is winning again with 13, followed by me, TWBB, and soundchaser with 12... looks like Director and maybe Picture will be the deciding categories.

I should see Revolutionary Road. For Michael Shannon.

I love Skyfall, and don’t really hate any of his work tbh, except 1917 which sucked dry all the respect I had for him, probably unfairly but such is life

I’m not crazy about a few of his hits, but Elton’s a tremendously underrated piano player.

Do you think if we all promised to spend, say $5, from one of the sponsors, they'd agree to stop having musical performances?

I was under the impression he was rated quite highly..? Do people knock his piano skills?

I'm sure the same people who knock Ringo do - people who think that the quality of music is in direct proportion to the difficulty of playing it

It looks like you're talking about a documentary produced by Geena Davis, not Portman. (Portman only appears in it.)

I think most like him more for his songwriting and singing. (And fair play, he’s very talented at both of those.)

I’d only advocate for keeping performances if at a future ceremony they bring back Eminem-style Sufjan Stevens and Annie Clark to finish their damn song

I don't think I've ever seen anyone knock his piano skills, but I don't see much praise about them either. Regardless, Elton John's had quite a few detractors throughout his career, even during his peak years in the '70s, and I don't think I've ever seen a write-up on John that wasn't better than qualified praise.

For the first time in Oscar history, a female seat filler will be sitting down when Brad Pitt has to pee. Amazing

Yeah I mean I know he’s known more for songwriting but I didn’t know he was rated low in actual musical skills, or that one skill overshadowing another meant that he was underrated there..

I just said to my wife that Brie Larson is always significantly prettier than I ever remember her in my head.
