Re: Why Won't They Release Only What I Want?

In honor of August 2011's releases not including La Notte, A Brighter Summer Day, To Sleep With Anger, Andrei Rublev, any Rivette, Bergman-&-Rossellini, Red River, or any reclamations from Lionsgate,
I propose the creation of a new thread or sub-thread, "Will Criterion Release Everything That I Want, In The Best Possible Form, On Blu-Ray or Retina-Display-4K-eyeball-vision, Before I Die?"
To make it realistic, Everything-I-Want ought to be limited only to films made before the year one was born. So in my case, we've got La Notte, Rublev, some Rivette, more Rossellini, Red River, Alphaville, Grand Illusion, and A Woman Is A Woman, and last week I turned 29. On the Rivette alone, looking grim. But who knows? Maybe Amazappleluflix will be streaming all in HD before I hit 30?
Perhaps we can come up with a criterionforum priority scale based on member ages & ranking, something like a transplant list?

No, you're supposed to go 'what.' or else it does not convey the proper tone.

What if the older ones among us die before they can be bothered making a list?

What if we all die before "Four Devils" is found?

The Fonz can't die! The Fonz will even live to see Criterion release
The Mother and the Whore!
Oh, and that's supposed to be maniacal laughter.

Is a maniacle like, something you wear over your eye when you're at the opera?

No, that's a monacle. However, many maniacal people do, in fact, wear monacles. That's not how The Fonz rolls, though.
silly shit (temporary)

Some part of me hopes they'll come to their senses and drop Following like a bad habit. Christopher Nolan in the collection would make Michael Bay only the second worst filmmaker they've ever dealt with.

Really? At this point in time you're doing that bout of silliness? Even if you (for whatever reason) don't like Nolan you at least have to appreciate the financial motivation for picking up such a film.

It is an utterly pointless exercise, what can the collection add to Nolan, other than auteur kudos (hardly!) he absolutely doesn't deserve?... A clever calculating director, not for the CC (hopefully)...

Making money so they can afford another Human Condition trilogy is so pointless.

If it means anything, I'm sure it's not the worst actual movie they'll ever release. It couldn't possibly be worse than Border Radio. But if it's a Nolan movie I'm sure it's no good because every other film of his I've seen is unremittingly awful.

Oh, good, ever since Nothing left we haven't had enough of people getting angry about movies they haven't actually seen

Nothing was here as recently as August 28 (according to his profile). ;~}

Why does Nolan inspire so much hate? I don't get it. He makes stylish, well-crafted blockbusters, some of which feature Batman. I can understand ambivalence, sure, but not high levels of knee-jerk antipathy.

Well, he is considered by some to be one of the decade's greatest "auteurs," or whatever - he's had that kind of praise placed upon him. I could understand if someone got annoyed hearing so much praise placed on a director they held in low regard; I like Nolan's films, though I feel that way about a few other directors out there.

I don't get it either. Sure, I'm not a fan of the Batman movies (but that's 'cause I think the whole super hero thing is just so much silliness), but they were good enough for what they were. Aside from that, however, Following and Memento are a few of the better-made movies of the late 90s-early 00s...and indeed, those two are some examples of the finest neo-noir movies of the last couple of decades.

I think Nolan's one of those guys like Wes Anderson and David Fincher where it's easy to hate him based solely on his perceived fanbase. I'm not entirely sold on him as a filmmaker, but the worst I can say is that he makes movies that aren't as smart as they think, which is far from the most horrible crime against cinema.
To be fair, though, I really poisonously hate Donnie Darko for failing to be as smart as it thinks, so I might be a hypocrite here.

I don't understand the praise, personally. Nolan's films are well made though usually overlong. I've never had the urge to revisit one of them. If people are really using the word 'auteur' to describe him, then that word is being misused IMO.
