I still maintain that this is their best film and the best use of the back of Olivier Gourmet’s neck in any film. It got a pitiful release in the US 20 years ago by New Yorker Films, so (as with Claire Denis’ Beau Travail) I hope it finds a more receptive audience now.

The film’s original release predates this iteration of the forum, so if there ever was any extended discussion of this film (which I doubt since so few people had an opportunity to see it), it got wiped out in a server crash.

and it's certainly deserving of one. I meant my posts at the time, as I don't wish to go back through my old teenage posts here when I first got an account to find myself asking for it. but it's definitely been a longtime favorite that I remember having to get off back channels back when I was more savvy to doing so. Criterion has generally done the ex-New Yorker titles well once they get their hands on them, this should be no different.

I hope that the reception to Toki and Lokita (which has been poor, from what I've seen) doesn't put people off from revisiting this. I will admit my revisit to La Promesse left me a little adrift compared to what I thought about it previously (I have never loved Rosetta and still don't, sadly), but I have faith The Son will be just as strong as I felt about it before. definitely reassuring to read that you feel that way too

Same here. They've made some great films since, but haven't topped this one! It feels like the perfect encapsulation of their work.

I'll go you one further and agree with the entirety of Matt's first sentence.

Also, Tori & Lokita is very good. It only really suffers from being exactly the same as all their other movies, though there are a couple of key distinctions

Being released in May by Sundazed Records, using the Rapid Eye Movies restoration.

I read that too quickly as the LaBute and got worried someone staged a coup at their headquarters

Been hoping for the LaBute to be released in a better version for a long time. Is it so reviled? Or is it just a rights issue?

The director is persona non grata at the moment

Between the real-life allegations and (basically the entirety of) the in-film content, I’m hard-pressed to think of a less likely title for them to touch

Or conversely, is it the most relevant title Criterion could possibly release right now?

I mean, I think it’s up there, but Janus and Criterion don’t seem to be interested in releasing controversial movies with academic extras addressing the ‘problematic’ content. Or.. movies with academic extras

A quick search of LaBute's name here reminded me of the allegations, whereas Wikipedia says nothing other than using the word 'misanthropic' a couple dozen times. Meh. I still like his first two films.

I think The Shape of Things is better than both of those. I'm also interested in his recent House of Darkness after reading some ominous review that seemed to indicate a form of reflexive apology by tweaking his usual shtick

American Cinematheque is listing Bela Tarr’s first film, Family Nest, as a Janus license. I haven’t seen it in over a decade, but remember enjoying it quite a bit.

Very good. I’m a fan of his early films.
