britcom68 wrote:can Criterion hold onto its Laserdisc-era supplementary materials (interviews, documentaries and most importantly audio commentary tracks) indefinitely or do the copyrights on that change for every title, expiring after a set period of time?
Anything Criterion
created that is copyright-able (audio, documentaries, interview video, etc.) would be subject to the corporate authorship term of 120 years from the date of creation.
Of course, there would be random stuff on the old discs (photo galeries, screenplays) that would have a different copyright period because CC did not create them for the discs.

If there was a newsletter clue then please post it here, because I haven't received one.

Incredible news. I'd been holding out on watching this for some inexplicable reason--glad I waited!

I am completely surprised and delighted, just as I was when we got the clue for Atame! Two films that we didn't even know that Criterion had the rights to that are now imminently being released! Between the New Years Clues and all the leaks and the major studios giving the rights to major properties, it's been easy to be disappointed/not excited by Criterion's announcements, but I hope that these two releases are a sign of what's to come this year from Criterion- major works by major directors that we had no idea were in the works! Super happy.

Nope. Only one stream in that image. This is obviously a clue for Breakfast at Tiffany's. Those aren't hearts, they're rear ends. A "Moon River," if you will.

Solid but predictable top 10 from Scorsese but kind of wish it wasn't so postwar - 60's Eurocentric.

Between this; Midnight Cowboy and It'ss a Mad (x4) World; they've obviously picked up another batch of MGM titles. Anyone want to speculate on what else they may have picked up?

He said in one of his movie docs that he doesn't feel comfortable discussing movies from after he became a filmmaker, and he's very autobiographical in his interests, so it makes sense that his loves are still his childhood loves.

Does anybody think the river could be referring to Elia Kazan's Wild River

Since that's already available in R1 in a fine BluRay, I'd say it's unlikely, and at any rate much less interesting than the other possibilities.

I'm actually shocked that something ranked above
The Red Shoes on his list!

20th Century Fox released Elia Kazan's Wild River. Love Streams is probably the best bet.

His thoughts on The River and L'avventura are interesting to contextualize with his soon to be in production Silence. That may be me reading to much into it, but I couldn't help thinking it.

I think that clue is exceedingly straightforward. Straightforward enough that a dunce like me got it straightaway. It's certainly not "Wild" or a "River".

That's because you have it backwards.

I'm just surprised they allowed him to list Contempt, given that theirs is OOP.

The file for the visual hint reads "wacky-2-14", so it's more than likely Love Streams; hope that clears up some confusion.

They allow OOP stuff all the time. (
This Is Spinal Tap and
Sid & Nancy frequently pop up despite being OOP forever). They even let Christopher Nolan pick something
NOT IN THE COLLECTION!
EDIT: Going over the lists now, it's hard to find one that
doesn't feature an OOP title (although in case of the older lists, some of them were still available at the time they were written.)
