In probably the least surprising news pertaining to him recently, Jonny Greenwood will do the score for this

According to a Reddit user, a trailer for this actually played right before a screening of 'American Graffiti' in London today. Basically they confirm that Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son is the lead alongside one of the Haim sisters, Bradley Cooper is most likely playing Jon Peters since he says in the film that his girlfriend is called Barbara Streisand, and that Sean Penn is in it.

Any one who grew up in Los Angeles of a certain era will remember the Licorice Pizza chain of record stores. I’ll still find old LPs at secondhand stores with their custom sleeves and price tags (also the very punny record store, Moby Disc). There was a whole scene filmed and cut in a replica store as well for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but is in the book. I also believe it’s the record store in the mall in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I think it’s a brilliant title for natives of Los Angeles to pinpoint a specific mood, period and feeling, but I’m sure a head scratcher for everyone else.

The trailer also played at the New Beverly tonight, someone who saw it there is saying that Maya Rudolph and Tom Waits(!) are also part of the cast.

Thanks for the context everyone! Need a Ryan Reynolds GIF of him acknowledging that’s why, though

The Eagles and Jackson Browne's debuts. You can't get more '70s L.A. than that.

Anyway, I like it - it's a better title than Soggy Bottom, which always brought to mind O Brother Where Art Thou? every time I heard it.

Both titles are sort of stupid but in the best way possible. I hope PTA wins an Oscar and the presenter has to say "the winner is Licorice Pizza" (Soggy Bottom also would've worked for those purposes)

Wikipedia says that Christopher Walken is in this, as well as Ben Stiller as a character named Cowboy Carl. Is this new info?

What was the context behind the name "Soggy Bottom"?

This potentially could have a great soundtrack. Especially if PT uses some obscure early 70s tunes

Was this truly a production that the studio and PTA just did really well to keep most all details under wraps or did PTA not even relay much info to MGM before and during shooting? every cast member obviously had to be cleared so I can imagine that was collaborative in every factor of people being kept unannounced but story details and such....

"Licorice Pizza" is a cute slang for vinyl. Those stores predate my time, but I did shop at the Sam Goody outlets that they turned into circa the mid-80's.

Matt Groening's day job after moving to Los Angeles was working as a clerk at one location. He distributed Xeroxed copies of Life in Hell that eventually led to a paying
job with the L.A. Weekly

No, Tower was founded earlier and ended up outlasting them. Tower was really mostly good for their amazing selection of periodicals. They always price gouged, at least in
Southern California.

My partner was watching Chopping Mall tonight, and I glimpsed a Licorice Pizza store in the background of one shot.

I always figured it was a slang name for the valley during that time.

I happened to go to the New Bev tonight for the Foxes/Suburbia double-feature and during the introduction was told the trailer for this would be playing. My biggest surprise is that this is Anderson’s first film in ‘scope since There Will Be Blood. The whole thing is cut to Bowie’s “Life on Mars” and seems to maybe Anderson’s take on the teen sex comedy. Sean Penn, Benny Safdie, and Tom Waits (who ends the trailer) are all seen for a second. I’m not the biggest Anderson fan, but have to admit I’m sort of sold on the trailer and think it looks excellent.

Has there been any word on the cinematographer for this? Same situation as Phantom Thread?
