With the loss of Umbrella, looks like AV Channel/Madman are revving up the releases. In October -

* 2046 - single or 2-disc ltd ed. metal case, both with Teo commentary (DTS as well)
* Tokyo Story - now only single disc, with I Lived, But...
* DePalma's Obsession
* Taste of Cherry
* The Wind Will Carry Us
* Kurosawa's Sanshiro Sugata

November has Keaton x 3 - Three Ages, Steamboat Bill Jr. and College in supposedly 'new transfers from fully restored prints'.

Warner has the 4-disc set of Ben Hur due November as well, $49.95rrp. Sadly this is the only 'classic' release on the Warner schedule for the next three months (apart from the James Dean).

I do hope so Flixy, although the artwork I've seen are direct copies of the Kino DVDs. Three Ages has 59 minutes of extras, Steamboat 65 minutes, College 90 minutes - everything from Carole Lombard shorts (no, won't go there...), cartoons, rare appearences, doco's etc. They must be from M2K, I couldn't see Madman putting these together.

20th Century Fox will be releasing Special Editions of Laura (1944) and All About Eve in November.
Roadshow will be releasing Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me in September, they released Cronenberg's Crash today.
MGM will be releasing Nineteen Eighty Four (1984) sometime soon as well.

Crash is pan n' scan, any idea with TPFWWM?
MGM will be releasing Nineteen Eighty Four (1984) sometime soon as well.
Fingers crossed they don't stuff up the soundtrack and score like the R1.

What's wrong with the soundtrack and score, may I ask?

The original, and rather brilliant, soundtrack composed by Eurythmics for the film was not to be found on the DVD, even though the case credits advise otherwise. Instead we have the director-approved Muldowney score. But what the f*** does Radford know? He made Il Postino for cryin' out loud....

Colour-wise, the R1 was also too, well, colourful. Memories from original screenings are of beautiful, bleak, de-saturated browns, blacks and greys. The R1 has been oop for some time, so I always hoped they would go back and fix it up. Hopefully the R4 will port the UKR2 which I've been told is fine in all regards.

(personal trivia - first sighting of female pubic hair on the big screen was Suzanna Hamilton in this film. Whatever happened to this chisel cheekboned, thickly-bushed creature of delight? She gave a stunning performance here.)

Crash is pan & scan???
Damn, I haven't got my copy yet. Do you know if it is uncut? 2.0 or 5.1?

TPFWWM will be selling for $20, so maybe Roadshow will be putting more effort into it.

Lordy - these are coming in at $32rrp. Fox obviously has no idea what has been happening on the local market courtesy of Sony and Warner for the past six months. Just this week I've found all the MGM Gold Editions now at $15rrp. (That's Good Bad and Ugly, 2-disc SE, for $15!)

So what's the deal with these MGM "Gold" editions?

I hereby propose to coin a new phrase in this context, that being "Fox-dark." Now, how many votes do I get?

All old MGM Special Editions, which usually had an RRP$30, were eventually replaced with standard editions at RRP$15. Now MGM are re-releasing all special editions as 'Gold Editions' with exactly the same extras at only RRP$15. So basically if you own the special edition, the Gold Editions are nothing new.

In other news, Sony BMG are releasing 'The Magic Flute' on September 20, but I am unsure if this is the Bergman version.

Thanks for giving me a hearty good laugh, Flixy! :D Somehow I feel l won't get an avalanche of votes. Everybody will think we've crossed the border of sanity when we use that expression - I can't wait ;)

I had a look at the MGM Gold edition of Raging Bull, thinking it would be a port of the Region 1 Special Edition. Yet it seemed its only extra was a doco...

Tartan already has it on R2. Here's hoping Criterion will pick it up.

Sneaking under the radar is Jim Sharman's The Night, The Prowler from '78 due late next month from Roadshow. It has been a long time since catching this on late night TV, so I hope it still stands up. Never thought much of Shock Treatment and Rocky Horror, but loved Sharman's work here.

Roadshow will also be releasing the first three Nightmare on Elm Street films in October. More details soon.

The French WKK coffret came out late last year and from what I have read the transfers were only so so.

...and they've also re-classified Nine Songs to an X, making it illegal to sell outside of the Territories. Unbelievable. Poor Accent, they can't seem to take a trick at the moment (whatever did happen to Triumph of the Will?) with little news of new releases from them.

There are no English subs, ARP (TF1 is the distributor) rarely bother with subtitles. I can't find reviews online now, maybe I have read comments on French forums or in a print magazine. From memory PQ was average.

Flixy, the situation would be laughable if not for the depressing fact one man and his beliefs has so much power and control, and so few in high places give a damn. The man's closet must be sight to behold.

The X classification is only a local decision in South Australia. The film is still rated R in the rest of Australia.
