Though undoubtedly Milestone's releases would be superior, if you can't wait until they get around to releasing these titles
Pride of the Clan is
already availableon DVD from Grapevine Video, while
Poor Little Rich Girl is on
this DVD coming out next month.

Many thanks for the updates, Dennis. I'm glad to hear that Sparrows will be receiving a restoration. And good luck with Rosita! Too bad about Pride of the Clan -- I may just have to go with Grapevine for that one but would happily upgrade when/if Milestone gets around to it.
Thanks for the additional info, Rufus. I'll probably just wait for Milestone's edition Poor Little Rich Girl.

Just to let you know, we just got in new DVDs of
STELLA MARIS (Mary Pickford)

We'll be alerting everyone we can, but I hope those who don't have, will support Image (and Milestone) by ordering!

I managed to grab this one before it went OOP, and it's a very interesting and fun (though probably minor) Lubitsch outing. It's also another one of those John Barrymore films where you begin to feel slightly uncomfortable watching him play drunk for comic effect. The ending is also slightly more Borzagian than you'd expect from Lubitsch.
BTW, Dennis, I assume you'll be reissuing these in Amrays rather than snappers, like the original editions...?

It's Image who produces them for us, but the answer is yes.

Whoops! My wording of my original post came out wrong. But I see you got what I meant. (I wasn't sure if Image might be trying to get rid of some old cardboard or something like that.

The producers would love it to come out soon. As Charles Burnett's friend and distributor, we're trying to help.

The Exiles is a fine little Los Angeles film, which I saw at UCLA as part of a series of Los Angeles-set films discussed in Thom Andersen's doc "Los Angeles Plays Itself." It's really fabulous that Milestone is putting it out, and I recommend checking out the film. Some great lost Bunker Hill scenes.
However, Dennis, I noted on the Milestone site for it, linked above but also
here. That you refer to Thom's film as "L.A. Plays Itself." That is WRONG - Thom even makes a point in the film about how he never uses the term "L.A." "L.A. Plays Itself" is the title of a gay porn film. But you really need to change it to "Los Angeles."

Interesting to note that Valarie Schwan, the USC film archivist, gets a plug. That probably means that all the elements for The Exiles have been in the USC archives all this time ... as are most of the George Lucas, John Milius, etc. student films, some of which came out on DVD in a weirdly selected collection from Fox not long ago.
I worked as a student in the USC Film Archive very briefly in the 90s, and found some cool stuff, but wouldn't have known enough to run The Exiles for myself then.

Valarie Schwan (who just left the archive last week to move to Oregon) was extremely helpful in Milestone acquiring the rights from Mackenzie's daughters and allowing UCLA to handle the restoration. The original neg, fine grain and optical tracks were all at USC.
As for Los Angeles Plays Itself, thanks-- that's been corrected. (Though I did notice you misspelled Milestone!) It was just my subconscious wish that we be connected to illicit films -- definitely more profitable!

Thanks!
Fixed my spelling errors. Forget "Milestone;" I wish I could get my fingers to type "the" correctly!
Valarie Schwan left? She was really nice to work with. I wanted to do a project with her, looking through old USC student films for interesting documents from Los Angeles past. They have 70+ years of those films there!

Yeah, Valarie was cool. And the USC archive doesn't have much that's unique, so it's nice that Milestone found a buried treasure in there.

Just to note that Charles Burnett will be introducing the 7:05 and 8:50 screenings of THE EXILES tonight (Friday, July 11) at the IFC Center in New York.
There are many reviews and interviews about the film this week. It's best just to
go and click on the links rather than me listing them here.

The Shadows, Killer of Sheep school of American cinema is my absolute favorite. We have no truly great independent realists in american film anymore. what a shame.

Andrew Bujalski's Mutual Appreciation is worth your time, but don't look for racial commentary there.
