I think de Havilland's performance is effective precisely because she was cast against type. When her deceitful nature is revealed beneath her seemingly kind exterior, the impact is all the more powerful.

Also, had Aldrich cast Crawford again, as originally planned, the outcome would have been obvious from the outset because the plot twist would have been the same as in Baby Jane? While Baby Jane is the more iconic film, I have always thought that Sweet Charlotte is more entertaining.
