(Because when you think "noir," you think "lens flare")
Xtras:
* Martin Scorsese on The Sniper, The Big Heat and Murder by Contract
* Michael Mann on The Big Heat
* The Influence of Noir with Christopher Nolan (The Lineup)
* Commentary with Author's Eddie Muller and James Ellroy (The Lineup)
* Commentary with Author Eddie Muller on The Sniper

Scorsese, Ellroy and Mann! Sony really are on a roll this year. Cover art continues to be terrible, however.

I'm not surprised none of the commentators are discussing 5 Against the House. Having re-seen it recently, I think it barely qualifies as noir at all.

Eddie Muller and James Elroy reunited on a commentary--fantastic! Elroy was an absolute blast on
Crime Wave. Very much looking forward to this. But
$54 on amazon is pretty steep. I wish they'd drive it down like warner does with their even heftier sets.

I'll certainly be waiting for a price drop on Sony's Noir Collection. Their Boetticher set has the same list price of almost $60 but I got it for under $25 in the recent Deep Discount sale.

I'm guessing that those of you who are expressing enthusiasm over Ellroy's presence have never sat through Ellroy and Muller's insufferable schtick at any of the L.A. film screenings they've sabotaged, er, introduced.
I heard from someone at Sony that Ellroy's remarks were so suffused with his usual racist and sexist invective that they weren't sure any of his commentary would get past the lawyers, but I guess it did.

Does anyone know if the transfers for "In A Lonely Place" on one of the noir volumes and "The Big Heat" from the other are new.? I am not disappointed with the single copies I currently have of these so am highly curious.

More Hammer coming in Icons of Suspense in 2010
The titles in this next set will include such masterpieces as Stop Me Before I Kill, Cash on Demand, Never Take Candy from a Stranger, Maniac, The Snorkel, and the great Joseph Losey-directed These Are the Damned. As with the previous Hammer releases, we are dedicated to providing the longest, most original restored versions of these films possible.
Been waiting at least 7 years to see
These Are the Damned.

Check out the idiots
giving the William Castle set bad reviews, ripping Sony to shreds for not releasing what they don't own.

Any chance The Big Heat or Underworld U.S.A. will get stand-alone releases?

I don't know why people bitch about prices. Last time I checked you can shop somewhere else besides Amazon.

I've been waiting even longer to see CASH ON DEMAND and NEVER TAKE CANDY.
And SNORKEL is nice to have.
Curiously I recall someone at Sony stating they were looking at DAMNED as a stand-alone. I guess they figured it mioght not have a huge audience (and let's hope it's the longer cut, not the one shown on TCM recently).

Before I clicked the link I figured this was a joke that linked back to a post in this thread. Sounds like the kind of thing people here love to complain about.

It looks like Scorsese is doing his best Woody Allen impression in the still from his interview.

My orders for the Fuller and Noir 1 set shipped yesterday. I'll report back when I get them next week (unless the Royal Mail strike tomorrow and Friday causes a major delay). [-o<

I will get this for the other films, but it sure looks like the noir set mushed up
The Big Heat - a new and worse transfer, what a shame!

Glenn Erickson at dvdtalk
reviews Film Noir Classics vol.1:
The Lineup is given the wildest audio commentary I've yet heard. Eddie Muller spends ninety minutes fending off a bizarre tirade from the completely uncontrollable author James Ellroy, who gets things on a roll by using the phrase "Donkey Dick" in his very first statement......both commentators give an excellent appreciation of The Lineup but Ellroy regales us with offensive jokes aimed at homos and chinamen.

Wasn't there supposed to be a "Film Noir Classics Vol. 2" released along with the first one this month? I got the first volume last week but I don't see any mention or sighting of a volume 2 anywhere online.
