Because LotR at the time wasn't part of a franchise, and it was a risky literary adaptation. I can't really consider it a "blockbusters", but also generally j don't think a summer blockbuster should win BP (unless it's a Spielberg level of wuality like Raiders, which doesn't exist anymore really)

That’s not really true about LotR, but it especially was no longer true by the time Return won Best Pic as the third release in a hugely successful series.

Yeah, none of that comment makes sense. Blockbusters are designed as films that sellout at the boxoffice which LotR did, the third entry of a series is ipsofacto part of a franchise (in addition to the fact that it is adapted from a reasonably popular series of books that had previous film adaptations), also how are we to determine Spielberg level quality or even if that means good (I mean he has come out with a lot of popular films) beyond shrugging over the honest fact that it is a subjective measurement.

By meaning Blockbuster I don't mean any movie that sells a lot of tickets, as La La Land made quite a lot of money but isn't a blockbuster. The designation I see is a film with a hefty budget meant to reach a very wide audience with promises of action scenes. It might have had a big budget, but I wouldn't necessarily count Blade Runner 2049 as exactly one, and this I think is one of the reasons it tanked (as much as I love it). Say what you will but LotR doesn't feel exactly like fitting in this designation. But my original post specifically meant regarding super hero movies. The last thing we need is more of them. This might sound not PC, but I felt the same about Wonder Woman. Just because your film finally shows a minority as the main superhero doesn't make your film that much better. I feel like this will open the gate for any "blockbuster" to add a little political agenda to it and cash in on it. Which is fine if it gets more minorities the chance to lead a superhero movie, but let's not confuse adding an interesting political/ideological side to an underwhelming CGI mess with a properly great cinema.

I don't mean to be caustic, but these two clauses precisely contradict each other -
The Lord of Rings had 'a hefty budget meant to reach a very wide audience with promises of action scenes.' It was also a very fine trilogy and rendering of Tolkien. It seems as though you're using 'blockbuster' as a pejorative term, and then exempting films you like from such a category.

Queen + Adam Lambert to perform at Oscars
Hopefully they lead things off, so I know when to start watching, if I indeed do so.

And if so, hopefully it's the last we'll be hearing of Bohemian Rhapsody for the night...

It'll be the last we'll be hearing of the movie if the performance comes after it wins Sound Mixing, Actor, and Film Editing.

You're a little more optimistic than I about how exciting this will be, domino. I think it's gonna go down like so:
Best Picture: Roma
Best Director: Cuaron
Best Actor: Malek
Best Actress: Close
Best Supporting Actor: Ali
Best Supporting Actress: King
Best Adapted Screenplay: BlacKkKlansman
Best Original Screenplay: The Favourite
Cinematography: Roma
Best Foreign: Cold War

Best Animated: Spider-Verse

Sound could go any number of ways, effects will *probably* go to Avengers, and I'm not quite sure about the rest.

I confess I'm watching this out of habit, love and now for the high probability of schadenfreude on the Academy's behalf. Are we taking bets on how cringe it will be though?

I think it's cool they're letting Elsie Fisher present an award, at least.
If Close wins, it will probably be because a sizable portion of voters voted for her without seeing her movie.
It's bizarre that everyone votes on cinematography, but I think that will push Cuarón over Zal.

Thank you for sharing that and I it certainly agree with you about how measured it is. More than once in the last few years he's made me wonder why he's still talking but I think he's on the money here for the most part.
