What has Jacott been doing lately? The guy is brilliant.

My guess is Mr Jealousy and Highball will get re-releases (are they both out of print?) but not from Criterion. I actually prefer them to Kicking and Screaming.

He and Evan Handler (who will eternally be Shrug to me) were recently, like anything else that was actually good on the show, under-utilized on Sorkin's Studio 60 as disgruntled hack writers.

Does anyone have a link to the Peter Weir interview about a new Picnic at Hanging Rock release? If so, is this release going to be done by Criterion or have they lost the rights? Just wondering because I'm debating about getting the old Criterion release during the DD sale.

Though a reissue is probably eventual, Criterion's said this isn't on their radar, so go region-free and pick up the new 3-disc R2 set coming out this month.

I haven't noticed this mentioned before, but the Artisan DVD of von Trier's Breaking the Waves is "discontinued," according to Michael's Movie Mayhem.

There's no difference. I could certainly see Criterion releasing it (as they did on laserdisc), seeing how the Artisan is censored and only has the trailer as an extra.

Not sure, but if I had her e-mail address I would certainly ask her if there is a re-release of Andrei Rublev in the works.

Yes, none.

I always ask about Tarkovsky (it's where the news broke on Ivan's childhood!), and except for the one time they said they were working on Ivan's Childhood Criterion has flat out said none are in the works (and that they do not own the rights to Nostalghia).

No real insight and may even be redundant, but I asked Tamara about an Alphaville reissue:

Hi there,

Though we have begun a highly selective campaign to overhaul some of the most important early releases in the Criterion canon, to the best of my knowledge we have no immediate plans for a rerelease of "Alphaville" at this time. We plan to continue the rereleases at the rate of about four or five titles a year, so please keep checking back. I hope this helps, and thanks for your email!

With reissues of Cleo from 5 to 7, Vagabond, High and Low, Salo, and Walkabout, and the new Blu line, I suspect that Criterion has reached its quota of reissues for 2008.

Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss coming this year or next.

Everything about the new e-mail bulletin is suggesting that Vivre Sa Vie will be getting a release soon, probably September, I'm guessing?

They're just promoting the upcoming theatrical tour of their Vivre Sa Vie print, which continues through December. I wouldn't count on the DVD release until Spring 2009.

A reply from Tamara regarding A Matter of Life and Death to one of the moderators on the .com board. I don't know if I'm reading too much into her response...but isn't this slyly confirming a Sony deal and maybe even A Matter of Life and Death?

This is a title we'd love to release and have tried for years. Actually, Janus used to distribute the film before the days of Home Video. Columbia bought the rights to remake the film and in the process bought the right to suppress the original film. We've tried to license it from Columbia but haven't been successful. Now that we've licensed Bottle Rocket, there may be more coming. If so, A Matter of Life and Death is certainly on the list. I hope this helps, and thanks for your email!

Now that is the weirdest reponse ever from Criterion. One has got to be speculative on this.

I don't think so. She says outright that they have not been able to acquire the rights to AMoLaD yet. All of the information that we have heard so far indicates that Sony is working on their own disc.

Tamara goes on to say that since they have been able to license Bottle Rocket, they may be able to work with Sony again in the future. I don't really see anything in her post to indicate that they've already acquired a full slate of Sony titles though. I'm sure that the Criterion brass will submit an offer to distribute a dozen or so titles, and Sony will either approve or deny some or all of the list. That's the way it generally works. Sony may well be waiting to see how profitable the Bottle Rocket release is before even entertaining such an offer.

Inappropriate phrasing imo. Suppress the film?! I can't speak about home video plans, but the film is fully available on 35mm and screens all over the country on a regular basis. There is no suppression going on here.

I've had Amazon ready to "send notice when this title becomes available" for AMoLaD since 1999 or so.
