I would also expect the Cassavetes box to be upgraded, but I think a box upgrade would be a first, no? I'm guessing they don't think as many people would upgrade and expensive set, and it is low priority.

They might do select titles over the time, but what's the likelihood of the entire box? Opening Night never even got a standalone release.

These are all smaller than the Cassavetes, but Monterey Pop, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, and by Brakhage, the latter of which was of course simultaneously upgraded to being a box.

Thanks, those are good examples. The Brakhage was really only the upgrade of a single title ultimately, and the others are probably just perennial good sellers. So presumably upgrading the larger boxes might be low priority for Crit and maybe customers too. At least in this case, there is a nice alternative if you just gotta have these on BD.

Right. I, too, expect Cassavetes blu rays more likely to trickle out than to come out as a big set for the same reasons. I just was wondering if there was some Criterion-specific hangup relating to Cassavetes redux, such as the old Ray Carney bit, that was keeping the titles prominently absent in our conversations. I take the comments above as a collective "no, not really."

Not Criterion related but Fox will be releasing The King of Comedy on Blu October 29th. Awesome news.

What do you think are the chances of Tree of Life getting a release? Malick seems to like working with Criterion. Is there any precedent of a director's cut of a film getting released first by Criterion? (Obviously if it happened they'd likely include the theatrical cut as well.)

Considering it was a very popular film that generates revenue, and that 20th Century Fox already released a loaded Blu Ray, I'd say unlikely.

Loaded? It only had that rather fluffy 30-minute appreciation/making-of piece and a trailer. Unless by loaded you mean the release also came with a DVD and a digital copy.

Didn't realize, thought there were more extras. PQ though is certainly excellent. Does anyone but Universal allow Criterion to release films on Blu-Ray that they themselves have also release on Blu?

I'm also not convinced we'll see various cuts easily available. I lost track of how many versions of the New World there are, but most of them are unavailable (especially in HD).

I'm not familiar with Rosi's Lucky Luciano. It appears that it has only been available on PD releases in the U.S. Is it something that Criterion would be interested in? They've licensed several films from Cristaldi. I'm not sure how Paramount might have ended up involved, but of course Criterion licenses from them too. Throw in Scorsese, The Film Foundation, and Cineteca di Bologna, and you've got Criterion's own film preservation syndicate. Seems like a reasonable possibility.

The consensus would probably suggest that it's (comfortably) his weakest film of the decade. Rosi was perhaps the best Italian director of the 70s and early 80s, but all his other works in this period had greater acclaim. A boxset of Rosi from '72 - '81 really wouldn't go amiss.

Especially since he's still with us, but in his nineties.

This 1994 book from Cinecitta International (in English) is worth picking up...

Mike's Movie Mayhem updated their database today and Criterion's dvd of Slacker has been changed to discontinued. The database is fairly reliable.They might just be doing a reprint in a plastic case like Spirit of the Beehive.

Slacker has a 60+ page booklet, so it would have to be cut down to fit in a plastic case.

That would make sense actually. Apparently Slacker was screened at Sundance 2011 in a new restoration celebrating it's 20th Anniversary. The supplements on the Criterion dvd are great but I could see them reissuing the dvd to use the 2011 restoration. (+blu)

I don't really see why this needed to go out of print. Ditto The Last Wave.

There was also a film, Slacker 2011, that played at SXSW (maybe at Sundance, too - I'm not sure) that featured the work of newer filmmakers paying tribute. This would make a great special feature on a forthcoming release. It notably featured Jay Duplass, if I recall.
