Mean Streets 4k and BD coming from SS as per their Facebook feed. Collaboration with Criterion but likely a FiM encode.

Gonna get that version, then, sorry CC, I like 100+ page books and stuff like that.

I'd have thought it was a racing certainty that it would be a FiM encode - I think they've used David Mackenzie for all their 4K releases to date, and there's obviously no good reason to stop doing so.

AFAIK FiM encoded all of their 4Ks to date, except Picnic at Hanging Rock. The restoration house (ironically named The Grainery) encoded that one.
Seeing the DNR fiasco that master turned out to be, I’ve been wondering whether David intentionally passed on it. However, someone on BR pointed out that FiM certainly has encoded DNR’d masters in the past, like Flowers of Shanghai for Carlotta.

I had no idea that was a
trilogy - I was underwhelmed by the first film, interesting as its conceit was.
Chopper is a great pickup though - been waiting for a proper HD release for what feels like forever

Second Sight have announced that they will be releasing their own 4K UHD of Possession from a new restoration supervised by camera operator Andrzej J. Jaroszewicz and Daniel Bird based on grading notes by Zulawski.
Should we expect that this will be superior to the Australian UHD coming first?

It’s Umbrella. Unless they’re collaborating on the disc, there’s not a chance it won’t be.

Absolutely yes to that. Second Sight does excellent work across the board. I’m looking forward to each release and (in my opinion) none of their UHDs are less than reference. The only one I remember with a problem was Dawn of the Dead which had one audio track with excessive filtering but that’s 3 (?) years ago. The Picnic at Hanging Rock situation was due to the director and DP. Second Sight are my favorite label working today, so I’ve read the news about Possession with great enthusiasm.
Umbrella on the other hand does a terrible job with their BDs. I’ve got hit last week with one of the worst-encoded BD sets I’ve ever bought (The Pusher Trilogy). I don’t want to speculate for their UHDs but if the BDs are that carelessly put together, I wouldn’t take the expensive plunge for Possession or any other title before seeing a trusted source reviewing the release.

FWIW Umbrella's UHD of The Last Wave is miles ahead of their BD as far as encoding is concerned. The UHD looked pretty good(!) to me, the BD encoding looks poor. The Last Wave UHD is SDR so I don't know if that helps make the encoding easier. Regardless, Second Sight's Possession will probably be the reference release unless the sources are somehow different.

I figured as much, and totally agree on their UHD dependability, which goes a long way when most other labels have less predictable outcomes. (I will just say Umbrella’s new Kids transfer looks great tho)

I agree, that one led me to buy the Pusher set. Now, after having seen these horrendous Pusher encodes, I can comfortably say that both Imprint / Via Vision (the kings of misleading customers into thinking that their BDs have new transfers) and Umbrella have the same authoring house. Their BDs start off with the same anti-piracy message, you can skip straight to the menu and the encoding issues are apparent on both of their BDs.
(In addition to that, their BDs now appear to be made in Mexico, which is another sign for me to stay away from them as much as possible).
