I posted about the Carlotta release because I thought from the details I saw on Amazon France it looked like an impressive release in its own right. Was not expecting to go ahead and order the Arrow collection today! But there's just no excuse to pass up on Duelle/Noirot/Merry-Go-Round.

Ah, good to know from an authoritative source that these additional films will be available individually at bargain prices in the near future.
Ah, I see you came to the wisest decision. Counting on being able to pick up obscure films at some indefinite point in the future is a recipe for disappointment. (see
Naruse, Volume One)

With this release cover art hardly matters.
Having said that, I must say I prefer the Carlotta design to Arrows 1970's children's book homage.

I know you're joking but just in case people are unaware, Arrow have in fact officially said that they will
not be individually releasing any of the films in the Rivette box. Just the 3,000 copies and then they're gone.

Great, and then all the youngsters who might only discover Rivette in ten years or so will be forced to watch crappy streaming mp4s of these masterpieces. So much for "The Future of Home Video". Does anyone still wonder why people are taking things in their own hands today with distribution models like this?

But the hope and suspicion is now that Duelle/Noroit/Merry-Go-Round have been made available on bd Carlotta or some other outfit will release them, for the US and French markets.

Like the flood of Rohmer titles we've seen on BD since the French box came out.

Arrow's set is now showing that it's Region B. That's disappointing.

Out 1 is being screened in its entirety at London's
Prince Charles Cinema, on the weekend of the 28th/29th November.
I believe this is only the second time that it's been shown in a British cinema.

Looks like the Carlotta boxset has been bumped back to 1/12/16.

The Film Society at Lincoln Center is putting on a very interesting
Lynch/Rivette dual retrospective, all on 35mm. Tickets go on sale 11/24.

One of the comments in the Rosenbaum interview that I really liked was when he compared his experience of London critics to New York critics, that London critics at the time associated with each other after screenings and discussed the film whereas New York critics were concerned about their thoughts on the film being stolen by the other critics!
That reminded me strongly of those comments Nothing used to make years ago about the ‘clique’ of UK journalism (even if they were not made in the most sensitive of ways!). In a way Rosenbaum is also suggesting this but from a much more positive point of view, talking about the way that a discussion on a film being shared and picked up on by others sort of tests a hypothesis out and if it is influential to even other critics that can show its strength (although I guess that potentially also runs the risk of perhaps producing a more homogenous, less diverse response if everyone agrees!). Ironically in view of the later discussion of Out 1, that moment of the discussion compared to Nothing's previous comments could be seen as its own illustration of the way a perspective can influence an attitude towards a subject: more paranoia and conspiracy theory focused compared to more free flowing ideas without a specific intent to form a cabal! Perhaps it all comes down to nuances of interpretation of human behaviour rather than the behaviour itself!

I think Nothing's problem with UK critics talking to one another was that they weren't talking about Thomas Clay. And who could blame them?

Did he ever substantiate his claim that Clay was a critical darling elsewhere?
Although I did enjoy his mad theories - including twice telling me that I was part of a conspiracy that was clearly so insidiously mind-controlling that I wasn't even aware of it.
More recently, I had someone of a very similar mindset insisting that the reason I worded something a particular way was part of a conspiracy against him - which was news to me, as the words came from my own fingers, unmediated by anyone else, and indeed were demonstrably in line with a practice that I'd followed for the previous decade.
But I suppose that's the thing about the conspiracist mindset - once the person in question alighted upon a particular "explanation", it's very hard to budge them, even if you know for a fact that it's cobblers.

Can anyone here confirm if the French Carlotta Out 1 set has english subtitles? It's noticeably absent from the back-cover although I would assume it would be identical to their upcoming U.S. set.

By the same token, Hard to Be a God was a "sellout success" in London.
True, the venue that sold out only had 29 seats, but let's not quibble about mere numbers.

I thought they were using the more universal revenue gross figure to compare the 3 movies but realised afterwards they were only using the gross made at the BAM.
Oh well.
