Sony has released a teaser trailer for Fincher's latest.

Also, based off David Prior's recent remarks on HTF, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony let Criterion do the dvd for this one:

The ultimate fate of a special edition of The Social Network is still up in the air, oddly enough. I won't speculate on the reasons, but so far there hasn't been much desire demonstrated on the part of the studio to step up for a proper special edition. For whatever reason, the marketing department just isn't that interested. Truthfully, there's nothing so unusual about that -- they evaluate their releases case by case and apply whatever marketing voodoo formula they do in determining which projects get the budgets and which don't. That's fine, that's their job. But since neither Fincher or I are particularly interested in half-assing it, we'd rather do nothing then serve up weak tea.

Okay, I take it back, I will speculate on the reasons. I suspect that the very thing that's interesting, as you said, is what's the problem: Fincher isn't the filmmaker most of us would first associate with an Aaron Sorkin script about college students, you know? And maybe there's a disconnect there for the marketing department. I'm sure if this fit more easily into the pigeon hole of what people think a Fincher movie is, things would be different.

But I don't know, I'm speculating. What I can tell you is that we shot behind the scenes every day, from pre-production all through shooting, and got some really great stuff -- somewhere near 250 hours worth of raw material. I can't promise you'll see any of it anytime soon, but at least we have it for the future.

And I've seen a rough cut of the first 45 minutes of the movie and it's really, really good. Jesse Eisenberg in particular is fantastic.

Fincher and Sorkin? Surely that combo has to result in something worthwhile. The teaser has definitely got me interested.

Awesome trailer. Just chilling as hell. Can't wait for Bret Easton Ellis' own actual comments on this one as it seems to readily invite them.

Very good trailer indeed - the last exchange had me laughing out loud. This film went from a mild curiosity to a must-see for me.

I was rolling my eyes along with everyone else when "The Facebook Movie" was first whispered about, but, wow, that looks incredibly compelling.

I'm hoping the trailer's little overture suggests the film will delve not just into the Facebook timeline (something I still have only mild interest in) but also into all the social embarrassments and weirdnesses evident on sites like it. I still haven't seen a film really explore the social aspects of the internet age in a way that really scratched my itches and made me twist in my seat with recognition--if The Social Network attempts this it would be hard to imagine it failing more than Swanberg's LOL, at the very least.

What about All About Lily Chou-Chou, Foam? That's still my favourite 'internet community' film. Even if the drama part of the film is a little overwrought in dealing with more extreme material (prostitution, various forms of bullying and abuse) than schoolkids normally take part in, I like the way that the messageboard becomes a way of putting all that stuff aside to lose yourself in talk with like minded people about the possibility of something better, even if all the high faluting stuff about the meaning of song lyrics and the way they make you feel is regularly punctuated by mundane posts asking about when Lily's newest album is coming out!

Ouch. Just when I had forgotten that Fincher was responsible for that glossy, boring, sentimental claptrap and had somehow convinced myself that his last film was really Zodiac... At least The Social Network seems to have more dramatic potential.

But hey, I must be wrong about Benjamin Button because 132,401 discerning members of IMDb have collectively rated it 8.0, which makes it objectively a better film than Il deserto rosso, Le mépris, Gertrud or Pather Panchali.

I felt the same way, too. The song set up a good tone for the trailer, had me wondering if it'd just be images and music with no actors appearing, and then Eisenberg (and Timberlake leering around) speaking over some typically Fincheresque photography really piqued my interest. I like Jesse Eisenberg anyway, but this really convinced me to see it.

I saw this in front of Inception last weekend and was incredibly impressed. It's one of the best trailers I've seen in some time in the sense that it made me really want to see a film I was barely lukewarm about based on what I had read about the plot/cast. Turned it right into a must-see in 120 seconds, impressive.
