53 Casa de Lava

A nurse accompanies a comatose injured man back to his home on the island of Cape Verde - a virtually unhabited Portuguese colony off the coast of Africa - to hand his care over to family. However, on arrival no-one seems to know who he is. As she waits for someone to turn up, the young nurse gets increasingly involved with the mysterious community and intrigue mounts.

Pedro Costa's second feature, Casa de Lava, is a dense and ingeniously metaphoric take on Tourneur's I Walked With A Zombie - another unique and startling film from one of the most singular and important filmmakers working today.
Release date: 25th October 2010

Terrific news. I greatly admire Costa's Fontainhas films, but I have to admit that I struggled with this one upon first viewing. If Second Run's dvd is as beautiful as their O Sangue edition, it'll be the perfect way to give it another shot.

I absolutely loved Bones and would like to pick this one up, but will it be R2 like your previous Costa? If not you can garuntee at least one preorder.

Edit: Just noticed de Bankole is in this. Please god let this be R0.

Yes!

Is there another João Bénard da Costa video essay to squeeze on the disc?

I hope so.

Jonathan Rosenbaum is to contribute a written essay which is either a reworking of an old one or a new composition. Costa is busy with other projects so there is a chance of a delay with the DVD but time will tell.

João Bénard da Costa passed away last year in May so I have no idea if Second Run had this DVD planned originally when they produced the filmed appreciation for Blood and had da Costa do another segment for Casa de Lava.

Doubt SR produced the essay -- it was included on the Portuguese DVD (MIDAS), just as the one on Criterion's Ossos disc was from the 2005 French DVD (Gemini). Wondering whether there might be one for Casa de Lava that hasn't been released yet, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

This is an intoxicating and magical film.

We're trying hard to get our MoC Costa films out asap, but it's going to be early 2011 now. At least with Second Run's sterling groundwork with O SANGUE and now CASA DE LAVA the UK will be introduced to Costa's oeuvre chronologically!

Does this mean you're doing Ossos?

We'll be making an announcement soon.

Meanwhile... all eyes on CASA DE LAVA! -- (and make sure you pick up O SANGUE if you haven't already). We're on a journey here!

Look forward to it.

I'd love to see an MoC disc of the Straub-Huillet film -- the Portuguese release is/was prohibitively expensive.

We've been working in conjunction with Pedro Costa on our CASA DE LAVA release and because of his commitments in filming and elsewhere we can't rush the project. Hence we've had to delay it a while again, but rest assured it IS happening.
We thank all those anticipating the release for their continued patience.

This disc seems to be delayed indefinitely, as Amazon UK now lists the placeholder December 31 release date, and other sites seem to have taken it off altogether. Any word on the apparent delay, Bikey?

Yes - unfortuntely the same story. We still haven't received a Pedro Costa-approved master, so we are delaying the release and not committing to a new release date until we physically have the master in our hands!
Pedro's been immensely helpful with us on this, but because of filming and festival committments he hasn't been able to give his approval on a new master yet.
This WILL happen. Please bear with us!
