March 22-- 90s Kids, rejoice!

Is it still good or would watching it be another assassination attempt on my childhood. I doubt it could take an other Bluthing.

I rewatched it with a bunch of friends last summer and we had a total ball-- it holds up better than almost any other film I liked as a child, with a genuine intelligence and respect for its characters. And it's charming as hell. Totally won't ruin your memories

It's still good! Watched it with my six year old boy a month or so ago and we both had a blast.

For what it's worth, one of my friends had never seen it before we watched it and she loved it (almost) as much as we did. Not liking the Sandlot is one of my favorite dealbreakers

Yes please. That is the only good Apatow film. It's also always good to see all of the Stillers in a film.

Whoa. Last year I started off summer with a double feature of this and Stand By Me. Looks like I'll be doing the same thing this year, but in Blu.

I adore this movie, and have since it came out. Say what you want about the 90's, but it was one hell of a time to be a kid.

Same thing happened to me with Camp Nowhere, which I maintain is a remake of Michel Brault's Le temps perdu starring Christopher Lloyd

I really don't remember loving it as a kid. Probably the only time I did enjoy watching it was when it was shown in lieu of 90-120 minutes of school when one day they showed it to the whole 4th grade. Really strange that Fox had two PG baseball comedies coming out that summer, Rookie Of The Year being the other. It could just be me, but I think Little Big League stands up a little better for me. Dennis Farina as the egotistical coach could have had so much more potential though.

I will say however that all the stuff with the dog and the chase sequence at the climax of the movie was quite exciting to watch.

Not that strange. I seem to recall that kids sports movies were huge after The Mighty Ducks. Most of them are still pretty fun now, but in that dated, nostalgic way. The Sandlot really still works because you can tell it was not solely pandering to the 90's kids. The thing oozes nostalgia. It's funny that its now become nostalgic for an entirely different group.

Stuff like the Mighty Ducks films and Rookie of the Year are thoroughly entertaining for kids and provide an incredible rush of nostalgia for those who grew up with them, but The Sandlot is a legitimately great film.

Re: Rookie of the Year vs Little Big League: If I remember correctly, and I doubt I've seen either film since middle school, Rookie of the Year was a funnier, more implausible fantasy while Little Big League was shooting more for pathos. I recall knowing that I should have enjoyed Little Big League more but thinking that Rookie of the Year's instant classic line "Did he just say 'Funky Butt Loving?'" was just too good to deny

Agreed, best line from any of those 90s kids sports movies. Daniel Stern's bizarre locker room wants were amazing as well.

So...I finally watched this, and I must say I felt a sort of retroactive '90s nostalgia for it even seeing it for the first time, so you must all now let me into your clubhouse. Also, perhaps some of you will be jealous that the drugstore where they buy baseballs at happens to be on the short length of street that I work on. The first time you see Wendy in the film I'm pretty sure you can see the front of my work in the background (though that was almost 20 years ago and it was done up like the '60s so I can't be positive). But in all likelihood, yes, I've walked on the same ground as Marley Shelton. Who is not bad looking:

A film from my youth and certainly one I'll never be able to trash talk due to considerable bias and nostalgia. I've got fond memories from the schoolyard talking shit using quotes from the film.

Edit: Just looked carefully at this thread and realized my response is aimed at posts from years ago. Oh well. Anyway, the Heavyweights blu ray does exist and the movie is still good. Nice to know Sandlot is now an easy $5 purchase.

Oh and what I remember from Little Big League was the kid trying to watch the dirty movie with the nurse when he stayed at the hotel. And didn't both movies have horrible step dads? Maybe Rookie was more that way...

If I remember right the kid in Little Big League had either an absent or dead father, with Timothy Busfield's character developing a romance with the mom. Rookie Of The Year had Bruce Altman as the mildly evil stepfather trying to make as much coin on the kid as possible. Both fine actors but I'm surprised that between the two, Altman seems to still be getting more high-profile supporting stuff. I think the last thing I remember Busfield in was a few spots on Damages.

Denis Leary played the stepfather in this, a 180 from the things he was being known for at the time.
