All of his recent output has been independently financed, which helps. The budget for "The Burial" is half that of Tree of Life.

Colour me very intrigued for this new (or should I say new-new) film. As problematic as the Sean Penn scenes in Tree Of Life are, it was nonetheless thrilling to see Malick take baby steps out of his comfort zone by not setting the entire film in period. Don't get me wrong, I adore the period settings of the previous films - but I'm very interested to see how his famous "dream-like, poetic" aesthetic translates to films set in the modern day. (And as much as I normally hate Christian bloody Bale and his inability to play anything other than iterations of Patrick Bateman, Malick managed to get an uncharacteristically lovely, unmannered performance out of him in The New World, so I have high hopes for their next collaboration.)

And he's not freaking out about being filmed in public!

For some reason I find that picture of Malick hilarious.

I liked "Tree of Life," but I am quite excited to see what Malick does with a different, presumably tighter filming schedule - assuming, of course, that he doesn't end up spending three years editing each of the films.

To clear up any confusion, this is the music fest one starring Bale, Gosling, Blanchett, Mara, and Hayley Bennett. No word on what it might be about. Knight of Cups is the one scheduled to shoot subsequently, and will also star Bale and Blanchett.

Interesting. I just hope Malick doesn't let his newfound celebrity (if you can call it that) get to his head.

I hope one of these new films has a post-production schedule of less than 100 years. As much as I love his work (and I really do - I loved Tree of Life more than any other movie I've seen this year) I do wonder if the man has any dicipline whatsoever, and if he is capable of editing a movie on a tight schedule/what the result will be if he is left with no choice.

Rooney Mara says that principal photography won't start until September. As you would expect, details remain incredibly vague. Mara seems unsure about whether she's actually in the film or not. The Playlist says that this is just pre-production work to help the actors "get a pinpoint on their characters," but as our own(?) CDE points out in the comments, the camera being used doesn't exactly jibe with that explanation.

Malick was photographed operating the camera himself and getting footage of his leads, so the notion that this is just an acting exercise doesn't really add up. Even if that's what it was originally intended, there's no telling what Malick will do with footage once he has it, and it was captured with a cinema quality camera (which Lubezki just used to shoot Cuarón's Gravity).

I am amazed that Malick is filming a movie based around ACL and SXSW. Maybe he'll amp up production and try to film at Coachella next month, too.

A few years ago I didn't think I'd ever say this, but Terrence Malick makes too many movies.

The film is no longer titled "Lawless," because Malick "gifted" that title to his pal John Hillcoat.

EDIT: I can't resist temporarily naming the thread Untitled "Indie-Rock Thriller." That is how The Guardian is characterizing it, and it must be the most bizarre combination of descriptors ever. Especially for a Malick film!
