Annapurna is also producing the 2 season David O. Russell/Robert DeNiro/Julianne Moore series that's coming to Amazon Video. They also have some series starring Julia Roberts that's beeing developed. Impressive tv slate.

Did he? I know a TV series was part of the original plan, but like a great many other components of that project, as far as I know, it never actually happened.

There was a TV series, but it was mostly just the features strung back to back to back and divided into half-hour chunks, with minimal allowance for the episodic format (for example, most episodes were awkwardly truncated instead of coming to some sort of natural conclusion or cliffhanger). IIRC there was only one episode with a significant amount of new footage. I'd say it was a failure and should've stayed as three features, but I assume Greenaway was contractually obligated to do it.

Could be interesting to have a bunch of plot setup via TV miniseries followed by a film for a big showdown or something, then back to TV, etc.

Yes, but interesting.

The impression I get from the article above is they just want to do a very long film and television is currently the only medium with funding to allow that kind of thing to commercially viable. So it's just a means to get to the film in the end.

Worth clarifying if you don't follow the link that this is an omnibus film and not a tv series as initially reported

Er, no, the article is pretty clear; it's being devised as one project that can play theatrically as an anthology film, but it's also being made in this format to allow it to be easily divided into six episodes as it's being produced by a Television company and seeking distribution from the networks.

It's been picked up by Netflix, but more important is the Coens' quote in the press release.

They always find a way to be kind of cryptic in interviews. Still, very excited for this project. Loved their version of True Grit, very traditional in a way, of course coming after interviews when they said they didn't like Westerns much. (On another note: maybe it's greedy of me that my reaction when seeing their next project would be on Netflix was, oh no, the blu ray will never exist...)

Minor bit of news on this project, the Coens will shoot digitally for the first time.

This might get its own thread, but I couldn't find the Coens thread. Anyway, their anthology series on Netflix is going to be a film made by the best directors working today

“We’ve always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme,” the Coens said in a statement. “Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the same, hoping to enlist the best directors working today. It was our great fortune that they both agreed to participate.”

Well, they might not be humble, but they ’re not too far off base.

I know several pundits are selling this as a new Oscar contender, but nothing about this sounds like it will garner any Academy attention. I don't agree with their quip, of course, but the above quote is pretty funny though!

I just hope it plays theatrically here in Chicago. Prominent Netflix releases have a so/so theatrical record here; we got OKJA here, for example, but not MUDBOUND.

Never been too excited for this one. The title and premise just kind of scream Coens parodying themselves.
