absolutely stacked package. MOC did this one right on the scholarly front. it doesn't feature any of the archival material from the CC edition though, so hang onto it for that. can't wait, glad this movie is finally coming to BD. as I said, it's probably the biggest non-MGM silent that hadn't come to BD yet

Oh yes!!! Finally! One of the highest profile films without a Blu.

What are the extras??

It's missing the superb Louise Brooks documentary and archival interview with her, so I'll be holding on to mine (albiet, funneled away with where I keep my bulky Straw Dogs DVD and other things I hold on to just for the extras).

Yeah same here, saving the disc itself and likely shoving it into the MOC packaging!

Does this, dare I ask, augur a possible Criterion release? Or will it go to Kino as I seem to remember they have it now?

I would guess if Criterion has an upgrade in the works they'll save it for a November but more likely December release.

A bit underwhelmed with the lack of extras personally for such a major film but will definitely be getting it anyway… unless CC announce before MoC release!

Three new video pieces and a new commentary track amount to a “lack of extras”?

And an 60-page book.

Lulu In Berlin would have been nice. It's otherwise a thrilling package, though.

I'm considering holding off on the Special Edition and picking up the lower priced Regular Edition when they release it.

Curious as to which superior extras you'd expect from a CC release. A video with Pabst picking favourites like Lawrence of Arabia and Harold and Maude from the collection at Criterion headquarters?

The extras from Criterion's DVD sound excellent and thorough.

Yes sad to miss out on the Louise Brooks interview, documentary and any potential documentaries about Pabst in general. Or a more scholarly visual essay on the visuals by the likes of Bordwell or Martin.

But hey; don’t mean to look a gift horse in the mouth too much, I’m still preordering this!

Watson/Cairns' essays are usually academically grounded, so to speak, not just vague impressions strung together as you sometimes see. Martin's usually aren't long enough to make a coherent argument.

Ah, the good old days.

Elsaesser's commentary seems to me the most valuable part there.

I usually don't get a lot from these documentaries (just a personal preference), but to be fair, it looks like more or less a straight interview with Brooks, with a few illustrative clips from the movie (preferable to the broader talking heads ones imo).

This seems to be the 2012 restoration funded by Hugh Hefner:
