INDIVIDUAL YEAR PROJECTS RUN FEBRUARY THROUGH NOVEMBER. ROUND 1 VOTING RUNS THROUGH JAN 4, 2026. ROUND 2 (THE OPTIONAL ORPHAN RESCUE ROUND) RUNS THROUGH JAN 31, 2026
If you are reading this sentence, you are eligible to participate in our forum's latest decades list project exploring the films of the 1990s. If you know anyone adventurous enough--on or off the forum--that you think would also enjoy participating, feel free to invite them as well.
Please PM me your list of what you believe are the top 50 films from this decade toward the end of the project.
I will send confirmation that I have received your list after I have tabulated it. If you haven't heard from me within a day, you should follow up with me to make sure that I received your list. You may feel that you could compile a list of 50 favorite films from this decade much earlier than the deadline, but it's still highly recommended that you engage in the discussions here. Don't keep your favorites a secret, and always be open to suggestions from others!
THE RULES
1) Each individual list is to comprise no more or less than 50 films, ranked in your order of preference (with no ties). If you haven't yet seen 50 films from this decade that you think are genuinely great (or even if you have), please take advantage of the resources listed below and participate in the ongoing discussions to find films that you can be proud to put on your list.
2) Anyone participating in this project should plan to submit a list by the Round 1 deadline. After this point, I will publish some preliminary results that will not reveal how each film has performed, but will at least make it apparent which films are orphans (i.e. those that have received only one vote, and so receive no points in the tabulation process). During the month that follows (Round 2) all those who are interested in participating further may seek out the orphaned films (or anything else they didn't fit in before the Round 1 deadline) and make revisions to their lists as they see fit, up until the Round 2 deadline. After this point, I will publish the results.
3) Any feature film, documentary, experimental film, short film, music video, TV miniseries, TV movie, TV special, or isolated episode from an anthology TV series released in the 1990s (1990-1999) should be eligible. In addition, any multi-year release starting in the 1990s should also be eligible. Year of release is established in my database for
SNAPSЖOT and also summarized by year as follows:
1990 /
1991 /
1992 /
1993 /
1994 /
1995 /
1996 /
1997 /
1998 /
1999
If a film is not listed here, please bring it up so I can add it to the database.
Some films that are eligible for the 1990s: S'en fout la mort, Sink or Swim, The Guard, Cabeza de Vaca, Only Yesterday, Northwest Passage (Twin Peaks pilot), Warsaw Bridge, Freeze Die Come to Life, Heimat II (entire series), Pride and Prejudice (entire series), Jeanne la pucelle, The Cremaster Cycle (entire series), Prime Suspect (each series/individual film), Wings of Hope, Crazy, My Voyage to Italy, Outer Space, Spectres of the Spectrum, Kikujiro, Riget (parts I & II combined), Father, The Atrocity Exhibition, McLibel
Some films that are not eligible for the 1990s: Begotten, Chameleon Street, Histoire(s) du cinéma (entire series), Visions in Meditation (entire series), Pièce touchée, Ilha das Flores, Darkness Light Darkness, The Horse Thief, Tongues Untied, Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Architecture of Doom, Korova, Bashu the Little Stranger, Fary l'ânesse, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Dias Melhores Virão, Horizontal Boundaries, La Vallée close, Audition, The Asthenic Syndrome, The Hill Farm
4) In certain cases, it may be appropriate for films that are technically separate to be combined, or for films that are technically combined to be separated. In such cases, you may vote for either a part or the whole, but bear in mind that all votes will be competing against each other (e.g. a vote for only
I Am Curious: Yellow would not count toward the vote for the two parts of
I Am Curious combined). Generally, if multiple films are allowed to be combined for voting purposes, you should probably vote for them that way unless you are strongly opposed to doing so. The most common cases:
• Single-director multi-part films for which each segment was released separately (e.g. Feuillade's serials, Lang's two-part epics) may be considered as a single film. Films included in trilogies may not be combined.
• Variant edits: For films that exist in multiple versions (e.g. Welles'
Mr. Arkadin, Rivette's
Out 1), all votes that don't specify a "secondary" version will be counted toward the "primary" version.
• Portmanteau films: Each of the individual segments and the film as a whole are all separately eligible.
We may occasionally need to make a special case. If you are seriously considering including a film on your list that you have a question about in this regard, bring it up in this thread and we'll iron it out.
However, I will not make any further exceptions during the last week of the project.

Guides Within This Decade's Threads
Do you feel you have an especially informed opinion about the work during this decade from a particular director, country, genre, etc.? Many people here would greatly appreciate your taking the time to prepare a guide for navigating through all that's available. (Though they do not necessarily need to be comprehensive.) Guides are especially welcome for extremely prolific directors/movements, or to summarize availability for films (such as shorts) that are often hidden away on releases for other films or only available on the web. THE MATRIX R. SCHMATRIX HONORARY SPOTLIGHT SECTION
Remember that part in the movie
Spotlight where all the reporters sat around and said "Hey, you hold your nose and watch this movie that you wouldn't otherwise want to watch and I guess I'll do the same for you"? Oh wait, that's not how it happened at all. No, those reporters went out and put all their heart into their work and gave long important speeches about it. In honor of their garrulousness, this section is now reserved for links to any and all posts on a particular film that are 500 words or longer. Why 500 words? Because when I used to be in the biz, I remember my editor throwing that number around a lot. Sorry folks, but we're living in a post-
Spotlight world now, and the old ways just aren't going to cut it anymore.

Let's talk about a few special cases:
Twin Peaks
In the past we have said you can't vote for this other than the pilot episode "Northwest Passage" (which screened in Europe as a film though with an added 20 minutes that solves the mystery) and Fire Walk with Me, which is straightforwardly a film. Since the last 1990s list The Return came out, though I don't know that that changes the situation. Lynch directed every episode of that and got to see his vision through to the end. It's not much of a stretch to call that a David Lynch film. In contrast, I think the original series was just too shaped by collaborators and the economics of TV to similarly call it "a David Lynch film."
Riget
In some ways this is a very similar case, with two "seasons" in the '90s and a revival decades later. However, a key difference is that von Trier directed every episode of the entire run, along with a collaborator for the '90s episodes. For the last 1990s list, before Exodus existed, people voted for the first two seasons together just as "Riget." So do we call that one thing and Riget: Exodus another thing for the 2020s? Do we give people the option to separately vote for Riget, Riget: Exodus, and "Riget Trilogy"? I think my preference would be to treat the '90s stuff separate from Exodus, but I want people to be able to vote how they want if they have a strong preference another way.
Three Colors
In the past we've always said this is a trilogy so you can only vote for the individual films but I'm open to making exceptions for things that were all planned out from the beginning and which might also be considered multi-part films that just happen to be in three parts. For instance, we treat Human Condition as a single multi-part film, though it could alternately be considered a 6-part film or a trilogy. Lord of the Rings from the next decade feels like a somewhat similar case. And Three Colors doesn't feel all that different from Dekalog in terms of the relationship between the individual parts and the whole. So I'd be open to letting people vote for either Blue, White, Red, or "Three Colors Trilogy," with all votes competing against each other, and with the general recommendation that you should vote for the trilogy unless you strongly oppose voting for one or two of the parts.
What are people's thoughts?

Agreed on no to Peaks, and Riget counting as a film for the 90s separate from Riget:Exodus. However I’d rather encourage people to vote for the Three Colors Trilogy separately, since I think there’s a pretty wide range of opinions on the films - most people seem to love one way more than the others

I will only be voting for Bleu, if allowed

Red for me.

I would definitely still allow people to vote for individual titles. My question is only whether there should also be a separate option to vote for the trilogy as a whole, same as how people could vote for Dekalog and/or its individual segments, with each option competing against all the others

I just disagree with a “general recommendation that you should vote for the trilogy” (which I think these allowances do on their own) but I don’t really care enough to argue with anyone who does

That's just referring to my comment in the first post for every decade: "Generally, if multiple films are allowed to be combined for voting purposes, you should probably vote for them that way unless you are strongly opposed to doing so." That's just to help minimize unnecessary vote splitting. If voting for the whole thing sounds good to you, like maybe you wanted to vote for them all anyway and this frees up a couple spots for other titles, you have that option. But if you really wish you could just vote for one of them, that's also an option. If you're on the fence and could go either way, you'll probably contribute to a stronger consensus by voting for the combined thing

Fair enough, my vote would still be no for this case tho

I would consider voting for Blue and Red, but never White.

It's been a while since I participated in one of these but I've been feeling a strong desire to revisit this decade so hopefully I'll be able to contribute.
I think no to counting Twin Peaks 90s as a whole, yes to Riget 90s as it's own entity and Three Colors separately (which as of now I don't anticipate voting for any of the entries).

As a reminder, you can all PM me your top 50 lists for the full decade at any time. I had initially set the Round 1 deadline for this Sunday, but since I'm a bit late posting this reminder, if anyone would like me to push that back by a week, let me know. After Round 1 voting, I will post a list of orphans, and then you will all have until the end of January to revise your lists if desired or to submit a new list if you missed the Round 1 deadline

What are people's thoughts?
the trilogy would easily be #1 for me if collected as such, but considering others don't feel strongly about this (and I'm way late to the party), it looks like individual it'll be. I do actually agree with you that if
Dekaog is a whole,
Three Colors is too...

Based on how people have voted so far both this time and last time, I'm pretty confident that if there were an option to vote for each of the three films or the trilogy as a whole, the trilogy would make the lower reaches of the top 100 (and even become eligible for the all-time list with multiple top 10 placements) while Bleu and Rouge would both place even higher. This would feel a little wonky to me. I'm not inclined to let people vote for the trilogy as a whole at this point (even though I'd personally prefer to vote that way)

Yeah, I took December easy too though I hope to take a dent out of the 109 eligible films from my watchlist.

Tsai’s The Hole is pretty compelling mix of Goodbye Dragon Inn and The Wayward Cloud even as it precedes both films. At first it’s an entirely interior world of subsumed observational existence, but slowly a reality of activity and emotion burst out. This isn’t an original concept for a musical, but where this beats something like von Trier’s empty pose is how the reality of musical is not the interior one, but rather a Cronenbergian virus forcing the characters to open up to being live emotions.

ROUND 2: ORPHAN RESCUE
Thanks everyone for your participation so far! Below I will present some preliminary results from voting. If anything you see here prompts you to defend your picks, to watch some more films, and/or to revise your list in any way, go ahead and do that, by the end of the month. If you did not submit a list yet and have since decided that you do want to participate, go ahead and do that, by the end of the month. If you have no interest in revisiting your list or changing anything, go ahead and do nothing. I will count all lists submitted so far including any changes or new lists submitted in the final tally.

A good opportunity to rescue (or at least watch) the Devilles, in spirit of the Radiance thread and all...

I will likely be voting for Dick, Single White Female, the two Allens, Red Rock West, Ghost Dog, the Spanish Prisoner, Microcosmos, Farewell my Concubine
I need to rewatch La Fille sur le pont (recently released by KLSC) and the Rohmers, so maybe I will
I have these unseen to watch and will try to do so: Caro diario, Bitter Moon, the Sweet Hereafter, the Devilles, Jeanne la pucelle, Breaking the Waves, Pola X

My 25 orphans, fwiw, and some little notes:
刑法第三十九条 [Keihō dai sanjūkyū jō] [Article 39] (Yoshimitsu Morita, 1999)
ハル [Haru] (Yoshimitsu Morita, 1996)
Morita's combination of intelligence, artistry, and craft makes him, for me, the best mainstream filmmaker.
バッドフィルム [Baddo firumu] [Bad Film] (Sion Sono, 1995/2012)
The craziest Sono film.
ソナチネ [Sonachine] [Sonatine] (Takeshi Kitano, 1993)
3-4x10月 [San tai yon ekkusu jugatsu] [Boiling Point] (Takeshi Kitano, 1990)
Has Kitano become marginalized?
Xích lô [Cyclo] (Trần Anh Hùng, 1995)
Poetry on screen. [And through the speakers.]
Julien Donkey-Boy (Harmony Korine, 1999)
Gummo (Harmony Korine, 1997)
!!
Unzipped (Douglas Keeve, 1995)
A (Tatsuya Mori, 1998)
Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (Nick Broomfield, 1992)
Would've thought the third of these docs was a shoo-in. The first is so fun; the second probably less seen - a riveting sympathetic look at the remnants of the AUM cult.
Das Schloß [The Castle] (Michael Haneke, 1997)
Deconstructing Harry (Woody Allen, 1997)
The Winslow Boy (David Mamet, 1999)
一个都不能少 [Yi ge dou bu neng shao] [Not One Less] (Zhang Yimou, 1999)
Passage Through: A Ritual (Stan Brakhage, 1990)
Hélas pour moi [Oh, Woe Is Me] (Jean-Luc Godard, 1993)
死の棘 [Shi no toge] [The Sting of Death] (Kōhei Oguri, 1990)
ラブレター [Rabu retā] [Love Letter] (Shunji Iwai, 1995)
Jeanne la pucelle [Joan the Maid] (Jacques Rivette, 1994)
He Got Game (Spike Lee, 1998) - the combination of Lee and Copland is breathtaking
Allemagne année 90 neuf zéro [Germany Year 90 Nine Zero] (Jean-Luc Godard, 1991)
Trouble in the Image (Pat O'Neill, 1996)
In the Company of Men (Neil LaBute, 1997)
La Sentinelle [The Sentinel] (Arnaud Desplechin, 1992)
