Re: Jacque Rivette on DVD
I can confirm that Secret Defense has got to the checkdisc stage, as there's one sitting in my review pile right now.

Yes for JacqueS Rivette the last line would read. If it could last for only an hour longer.Tommaso wrote:"Locked up inside my opium den

A propos of which. Does the new AE edition of Noiseuse have the Claire Denis doc on it that bumps it to 3 discs?
Is this yet another question for Checkdisc Charlie aka MichaelB?

I thought/hoped the two-hour version was on the third disc

Re: Jacque Rivette on DVD
People do realize that Rivette's given name is mis-spelled in the title of this thread, don't they? Who can fix this -- or do we like having it wrong? ;~}
Addendum -- some kind moderating entity has fixed JR's name.
Hurrah!

Now that's a quite rivetting proposal.

Re: Jacque Rivette on DVD
OK. I expected it to be on course for October. It was the only one I didn't have in the as-yet-unmaterialised collection but ordered the set anyway as it was fairly cheap. The R1 had become too difficult and expensive to source, but I've since picked up the R1 at an OK price as I didn't really want to wait until Oct. Although I guess if Secret Defense is definitely coming then that collection shouldn't be too hard to cobble together - seeing as AE already have both Marie & Julien & Va Savoir in circulation...MichaelB wrote:I can confirm that Secret Defense has got to the checkdisc stage, as there's one sitting in my review pile right now.

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
Apologies if this has been mentioned before.
The French DVD of La religieuse/The Nun by Studio Canal was released on Sept. 7. Does anyone know if it is due out in the UK or US in the near future?
Check this out on youtube for a teaser.

This looks like a DVD-R no? Lionsgate owns the rights in the US and I doubt they'll release it on a regular line.charal wrote:Apologies if this has been mentioned before.

Studio Canal can easily start pumping out DVD-Rs for Optimum and Lionsgate, it's just a matter of making subs. Studio Canal has been so slow on their Blu rays its embarrassing, so I doubt we'll ever see this terrific film in 1080p.

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
Can DVD-R not be dual-layer, anamorphic, or progressive?
My point was that once in the SC DVD-R system there's little reason why Lionsgate couldn't offer it to North Americans who like Rivette. You know, the six of us.

pardon. In that case, I'll say I'm not an expert on what makes a DVD-R distinguishable from a regular commercial DVD, but can say that, superficially, it looks like any other disc I own.

Oh? ... I am very sorry. I didn't mean to communicate that I'd considered your post as unnecessary, accatone. On the contrary, I think that it's been quite a good idea to hint at the upcoming Absolut release in the Rivette dvd thread, so I suggest not to delete!

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
For some reason, the main discussion of this release and Rivette in general is currently going on in the CC Forthcoming Thread here. Perhaps these posts should be moved to this thread or the general Rivette thread in the Old Films section?

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
Posted some screen-caps of the Italian release of Merry-Go-Round in the proper thread.
In short: looks very good, no English subs (forced Italian subs, but not burnt-in, i.e. removable if you back it up - burn a new disc).
Slightly techy: the Italian disc is PAL-encoded, 153 min run-time, average bit-rate: 6.5 Mb/sec, dual-layered, region 2 coded.

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
Thanks. I have the German release (the 4-disc Rivette box set from Kinowelt/Arthaus) which seems a bit softer and more grainy, I think. I'll see if I can grab some matching screen captures tomorrow.feckless boy wrote:Posted some screen-caps of the Italian release of Merry-Go-Round in the proper thread.

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
I've uploaded some screen caps of the German dvd. The Italian dvd definetely looks better. Notice in the first image, for instance, how the letters on the letter in his left hand are almost missing.

Re: Jacques Rivette on DVD
Yeah, the letters on the letter! But the German disc certainly looks watchable, no? I know it's hard to tell from just a few screen-grabs, but it seems to be on par with BFI's Céline and Julie - a decent placeholder.

Who actually owns the rights to Out 1? Who would Criterion hypothetically license it from?
