Re: The Mystery of the Phantom Web Pages
It's probably The Heiress since I bought the DVD for my wife.

I'm betting Hughes is for the 1932 Scarface.

Every one of the other pages of the batch is for directors, so it's unlikely there happens to be one exception. It may well be coming, but under this grouping we wouldn't see as Hawks already has a page up.

Re: The Mystery of the Phantom Web Pages
I'm truthfully not as well-versed on licensing as others, but I didn't see it on domino harvey's list. The Best Years of our Lives is Warner Bros., right? It was with Goldwyn and the Amazon page for the 2012 DVD lists the studio as WB. I'm getting the sense I'm answering my own question, but domino's perhaps accidental exclusion gave me pause.

Yes, the previous BD release is Goldwyn/Warners.

Yeah, I missed that one, and it's a likely candidate for Criterion too!

Re: The Mystery of the Phantom Web Pages
Arrow's announcement of Pulp reminded me that Mike Hodges had a phantom page and I thought Pulp was the most likely candidate (especially after Hen's Tooth released Croupier). But I just looked and it seems that Hodges' page is gone. It had been around since at least 2012 so I guess this was another situation where Criterion licensed something and let it lapse—but what?

Re: The Mystery of the Phantom Web Pages
Most of the recent Phantom pages have been for the deal with Czech NFA (and a lot of these are duplicate pages as a number of the directors already have had titles released by Criterion) or pages for short film directors for Filmstruck, but they've finally added a new page that doesn't seem, to fall into either of these two categories:

It has to be King of Jazz, since Universal Studios recently restored the film a year ago. I wondered if Criterion would've handled this when I heard the news that this was one of the movies the studio was restoring.dwk wrote:Most of the recent Phantom pages have been for the deal with Czech NFA (and a lot of these are duplicate pages as a number of the directors already have had titles released by Criterion) or pages for short film directors for Filmstruck, but they've finally added a new page that doesn't seem, to fall into either of these two categories:

My personal guess for Ophuls would be The Sorrow and the Pity but what do I know?

Maybe a box set like they did for Les Blank.

Sorrow would be a firm bet but would be even more of a stormer if boxed with Hotel Terminus and Memory of Justice.Big Ben wrote:My personal guess for Ophuls would be The Sorrow and the Pity but what do I know?
An outside contender could be the 'Conversation with Godard' as a choice cut to add to a major J-L G release.

Milestone is still selling the DVD for The Sorrow and the Pity on their site, so would that mean that it's improbable that Criterion will be releasing it?NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Sorrow would be a firm bet but would be even more of a stormer if boxed with Hotel Terminus and Memory of Justice.Big Ben wrote:My personal guess for Ophuls would be The Sorrow and the Pity but what do I know?

I thought that Arrow Academy also had released The Sorrow and the Pity on Blu-ray, seemingly negating the need for a Criterion edition.joshua wrote:Milestone is still selling the DVD for The Sorrow and the Pity on their site, so would that mean that it's improbable that Criterion will be releasing it?NABOB OF NOWHERE wrote:Sorrow would be a firm bet but would be even more of a stormer if boxed with Hotel Terminus and Memory of Justice.Big Ben wrote:My personal guess for Ophuls would be The Sorrow and the Pity but what do I know?

The Arrow release is Region B, so there's plenty of reason for Criterion to release it.

Re: The Mystery of the Phantom Web Pages
Milestone not only still sells The Sorrow and the Pity on DVD but also handles theatrical bookings, so I'm pretty confident it's still with them. Hotel Terminus is by all indications still with Icarus. I'm gonna go with The Memory of Justice, given that it was just restored and I can't see Paramount releasing it themselves.

He was also an uncredited assistant to John Huston on Moulin Rouge, appeared in Francois Truffaut: Portraits volés, and interviewed Costa Gavras for a documentary short shortly after the release of Seccion Especial, and appeared in the documentary Die Ullrich, about actress Luise Ullrich who appeared in his father's film Liebelei.
There's a lot that Marcel Ophuls' name could entail, and I'm not sure the best of them (Liebelei!) would be films he himself directed.

Great film but I’m not sure my soul could handle another viewing of it.
